Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the free entry and the impressive panoramic views from the rooftop of St. John's Castle. The historical displays, including the prisoner carvings, are also noted as interesting. However, the seasonal opening hours and the steep, worn steps to the top are common points of caution for potential visitors.

"Great feature for the town centre of Stranraer looks great standing there in the middle. Unfortunately when we visited it was a Sunday when the castle was closed. So never got the opportunity to explore it's rooftops."

DAZ Ashton

"Unfortunately the castle was not open when we visited, so we could not see inside. However we enjoyed viewing it from outside, especially the very impressive poppy art installation for the forthcoming Remembrance Sunday. The castle overlooks a town square with lots of seats, along with a couple of information panels about Stranraer. There is also a small plaque on the castle that provides more information about its history."

Elizabeth Baker

"Unfortunately this place was not open when I visited, it is seasonal. The information board outside says that it is free entry. It is in a good central location and easy to find."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

A Glimpse into History

St. John's Castle, a prominent tower house, dates back to the 16th century. Originally built as a residence for the powerful Adairs of Kilhilt, its purpose shifted dramatically in the 1800s when it was repurposed as a prison. This transformation involved removing the pitched roof and constructing a flat one, which served as an exercise area for inmates. Reddit

Today, the castle stands as a visitor centre, offering free admission and a chance to delve into its layered past. The displays inside are thoughtfully curated, providing insights into its history and the lives of those who were once held within its walls. A particularly poignant historical detail is the presence of carvings of ships etched into the cell doors by prisoners, a testament to their experiences and perhaps their longing for freedom. Reddit

While the interior offers a historical journey, the true highlight for many is the ascent to the rooftop. This requires navigating approximately 100 steps, which are noted as being worn and steep. However, the effort is rewarded with truly spectacular panoramic views, encompassing the town of Stranraer, the tranquil waters of Loch Ryan, and the rolling Scottish countryside. On a clear day, the distant sight of Ailsa Craig adds to the breathtaking vista. Reddit

Visitor Experience and Accessibility

The free entry to St. John's Castle makes it an attractive and accessible attraction for all visitors. The museum exhibits are designed to be engaging for a wide range of ages, ensuring that families can enjoy learning about the castle's history together. Reddit

However, visitors should be aware of the physical demands of exploring the tower. The climb to the rooftop involves navigating around 100 steps, which are described as steep and worn in places. This aspect might pose a challenge for individuals with mobility issues or those who find strenuous climbing difficult. It's advisable to wear comfortable footwear for the ascent. Reddit

Despite the stair challenge, the rewarding rooftop views are a major draw. The panoramic scenery offers a fantastic opportunity for photography and provides a comprehensive perspective of Stranraer and its surroundings. Temporary art installations, such as the poppy art for Remembrance Sunday, also add a unique and often moving element to the visitor experience. Reddit
