• Harpley, St Lawrence, Norfolk • A lovely 13th century church with some outstanding woodwork! The rood screen is late 14th century, though repainted in 1865. The carved benches are mainly 15th century, and feature the carving of a bishop and lots of animals and beasts. The south door is the great treasure of this church. Carved in the late 15th century, it includes figures of the Four Doctors...

Reviews Summary

St. Lawrence Church is lauded as a historically significant and architecturally impressive medieval church in Ipswich, praised for its unique blend of stone and brickwork and its well-restored tower. Visitors particularly enjoy the vibrant community cafe, highlighting its delicious homemade cakes, friendly staff, and welcoming atmosphere, making it a true gem in the town center. Reddit

"A historically important grade II listed medieval church, one of the twelve to be found in Ipswich. It has the oldest ring of five church bells in the world.

It now has a community centre at its heart. In particular a cafe."

Paul Godden

"St. Lawrence church is located in the centre of town, being one of Ipswich's 12 medieval churches. The building is both an attractive & impressive combination of stone & red-brick, having the appearance of the Suffolk wool churches. The tower is particularly well proportioned & ornate since its restoration in 1882, & stands out from around the town centre. The building is interesting for having several wooden doors, some particularly narrow, as well as some intricate carvings in the stonework. Unfortunately, due to its town precinct siting, the churchyard boundaries have been encroached upon by surrounding buildings. As with neighbouring St. Stephen's, St. Lawrence's has old tombs & gravestones dotted around it in what has now become part of the pavement. Yet, alike nearby Ancient House, the church itself somehow remains almost unspoilt, as if still a part of the time when it was built..."

This preservation allows visitors to feel a connection to its past, as if stepping back in time. Reddit
