"Love this place. To walk the dog, ride your bike, just to take 5 minutes break, take the kids on the play area, play tennis or basket ball or even cricket practice in the purpuse built areas, even has a small dog friendly cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. The "rose garden" and the flower beds are amazing, not to mention the small sunken pond for the ducks, with its beautiful lily pads. It really is a lovely place, that hasn't been spoilt by modernisation. The "ruins" are also a lovely bit of history, that makes a wonderful backdrop for so many wedding photographs."

A Glimpse into History: The Priory's Past

The St. Thomas Priory Ruins are remnants of a priory founded in 1160 by Gervase Paganel, originally a dependency of the Cluniac Priory of Much Wenlock. Built from local limestone, it held significant possessions including several churches. The priory experienced periods of dissolution and refounding, with notable enlargements like the 14th-century archway to the Lady chapel. Reddit

Its final dissolution occurred in the 1530s under King Henry VIII, after which the buildings fell into disrepair. In later centuries, parts of the ruins were repurposed for industrial activities. The surrounding land was eventually purchased by Dudley County Borough Council in 1926 and incorporated into the new Priory Park, preserving its historical essence for public enjoyment. Reddit

Archaeological work in 1939 marked out the original walls and cloisters, and medieval tiles are now visible. This integration of history within a public park allows visitors to connect with the past while enjoying a contemporary recreational space. Reddit
