Embrace the Mud!

Bowesfield Nature Reserve is a haven for wildlife, but its natural beauty comes with a price: mud! Especially after rain, paths along the River Tees can become very boggy. Pack waterproof boots or wellies to fully enjoy your exploration without getting soaked.

Timing is Key for Tranquility

While peaceful year-round, consider visiting during off-peak hours to truly soak in the tranquility. The parking area near workplaces can get busy during the day. Early mornings or late afternoons, especially during sunset, offer magical light and fewer visitors.

Reviews Summary

Bowesfield Nature Reserve is cherished as a tranquil haven with a delightful mix of marsh and river wildlife, including free-roaming horses. Visitors appreciate its peaceful atmosphere, especially during sunset. However, be prepared for muddy paths, particularly after rain, and consider the terrain if cycling.

"Fantastic little place of tranquility! Great mix of wildlife in the marsh and nearby river Tees - horses can roam free here but very content to munch grass and seem blissfully unaware of you. It can get very muddy so wear appropriate footwear. Footpaths could do with a little TLC."

David Anderson

"A lovely place filled with nature. Bowesfield Marsh makes for a good walk with friends and family in the daytime and seems pretty dog friendly.

It's not so well lit at night, of course, as it seems it's being kept as close to nature as possible so there are no lights around the trail bar a small one or two that I've seen by steps at the gravel car parking area on the way in. It is by workplaces so I'd imagine the parking area would get busy during working day hours."

Mark Garratt

"A peaceful and beautiful place. We went at sunset in December and the sun glows through the tall reeds. Most paths lead you to the waters edge. The path running parallel to the river gets very muddy after rainfall."
