Visitors rave about Twyford Waterworks, particularly during its open days, praising the impressive operational steam engines and the dedication of the volunteers. Many highlight the family-friendly atmosphere, nature trail, and the educational value of seeing industrial history come alive. While primarily an event-driven attraction, the experience is consistently described as brilliant and well worth a visit.
"If you're into industrial history then you'll love this place. There were various different pumping engines being demonstrated and free guided tours of the works (once you've paid to get in). They sometimes have various displays outside as well. The event I went to had a display of classic cars. I believe the October open day will feature various steam machinery."

"We have just returned from a brilliant bank holiday open day at Twyford Waterworks. This is one for all ages, backgrounds, families etc. The volunteers here and staff have done a really good job of organising, displaying and describing the steam engines, boilers and pumps. It is amazing to see them all working and so lovingly looked after, preserved and cared for.
There is a wonderful nature trail, complete with a large pond where the younger children (and adults) were thoroughly enjoying pond dipping and learning about all of the wildlife and plants at the site, plus a play area and a wooden bird hide, overlooking the pond where you can look out for all the birds in the area.
In addition, there is a lovely outdoor seating area at the back, with cover over half of it where we had a delicious slice of cake and tea and we also enjoyed the barbecue food on offer.
There's a small gift shop, for those that wish to take home a souvenir from the day or a trinket/toy, plus clean toilets and a marquee where you could buy second-hand books etc. and we also purchased a guide with all of the information and history of Twyford Waterworks.
The parking is free and plenty of it; again, well organised with friendly volunteers showing you where to go on arrival and, for those that wish to take public transport on the open days, there is a vintage bus service running from Winchester town centre that drops you off, right outside.
For motor enthusiasts, there were also a few vintage cars and bikes on show, plus 2 large steam engines. A brilliant day out and we will be returning again!."

"Fantastic educational open day. So much you never see of how things work like this and the amazing work the volunteers and trust have put in to restore and maintain this waterworks.
If you're slightly interested in engineering, the past, architecture, steam engines I highly recommend a visit."
