Tyneham is Dorset's famous ‘lost’ village. In Nov 1943 all residents were told to leave within 28 days as the area was needed for forces’ training. On 17 Dec 1943 the last residents left believing one day they could return. Sadly this was never to happen. Today, the village is still part of the Army Ranges but access is allowed most weekends. #tynehamvillage #village #abandonedvillage #dorset #do...

Reviews Summary

Tyneham Village is a poignant 'ghost village' offering a unique step back in time, especially within its preserved school and church. Visitors appreciate the free entry and the atmospheric walk to Worbarrow Bay, though some note recent construction impacting interior access. It's a place for reflection on history and the impact of WWII.

"Love this place! Great wander around these derelict buildings imagining what it was like to live there. The school is intact along with the church. There is a hot drinks and snacks van at car park with tables and chairs which is very good. Entry is free."

Sue Ruddick

"Also known as the ‘ghost village’ of Dorset, it was used as a military training area after being evacuated in 1943. Many of the buildings are now derelict and just the outer shells but the church and school are fully intact and you can enter both, in the school there items of work left from the children who studied there on display and the church is still fully functional.

This is a great stop off point if you’re travelling around the area just to take a step back in time and reflect."

Jamie Higgs-Dey

"A very interesting place, rich with historical facts, and fascinating stories. Even though many parts of the buildings have deteriorated, the lower level structures and wall are still standing give you an idea on the size of the rooms back then.

The school building is wonderful. It had works produced by the children together with the teacher’s comment. All this does give you a sense of going back in time. The village looks like it has just frozen in time. This makes it more real because there is no mobile signal so you have literally gone back in time.

The amazing thing is that there is no charge for visiting this attraction except the suggested £4 donation for the parking. The funny thing is that if you look at one of my picture, there is a sign that is 10ft in the air saying please pay here. Mmmm. That would be a challenge.

We had a great time wondering round. Highly recommended."
