Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Unitarian Meeting House in Ipswich for its fascinating history and well-preserved traditional interior, noting the welcoming atmosphere and the unique architectural features like the ship mast columns. Some mention it's open on selected days, so checking hours is advised.

"The Unitarian Meeting House is easily found, neighbouring the Willis Towers Watson building. It's something of a contrast to its modernist neighbour, to say the least, built in 1699 in traditional style of the time. From the exterior, there's nothing much to identify the intended purpose of the building was religious, but for a neat row of gravestones standing beside the red-brick wall at the entrance. The Meeting House might appear alike an ordinary townhouse from outside, but the interior is more alike a church with traditional dark wooden pews & pulpit. The 4 columns holding up the ceiling were reputedly carved from former ships' masts. The east door has a carved spyhole to identify unwelcome (both Roman Catholic & 'High Church' Anglican spies/informants) visitors during this time of religious turmoil. Ipswich's Unitarian Meeting House is considered the best preserved example of such a type of building in England. On the opposite side of the road from the Meeting House was where Thomas Wolsey is believed to have been born."

"Amazing building with a fascinating history - and good to see it's congregation still welcoming those with a liberal progressive faith (or none!)"
