Walk with me down memory lane! Brewers Quay is such a significant building in Weymouth. The converted Victorian brewery in Hope Square in Weymouth produced beer until 1985. However, since the closure of the brewery, the building has housed quaint little shops, cafes, and a pub and restaurant. Most notably, the building was the home for the famous Time Walk interactive museum, taking guests thro...

Reviews Summary

Weymouth Museum's temporary exhibition is a free, quick visit offering a glimpse into local history, appreciated for its friendly volunteers and historical artifacts. However, some visitors feel it's small and could benefit from more funding and improved displays to fully represent Weymouth's rich heritage.

"A taster of Weymouth Museum is now open in St Thomas street, while the original museum building is being refurbished. As this is only a sample of the full museum entry is free, although we left a donation. A great way to while away 20 minutes, finding out about Weymouth's history. Volunteers are friendly. Limited opening hours. Well worth a visit."

"Really small, but cute in it own way. It's worth popping in."

"This used to be an amazing attraction taking you through the history of Weymouth guided if I remember correctly by a talking cat. Now it's a room with very little of interest in it a lot of what is there isn't even real always disappointing to look at a civil war weapon and see the words replica of weapons used. The displays do not really link together to do justice to the rich and interesting history of Weymouth. Weymouth is a lovely place with great friendly people (the people running the museum where very nice) and it is obvious the people who have set the museum are trying but come on Weymouth council put some funding their way and bring back a museum that does justice to the area."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Weymouth's Maritime History

Weymouth has a deep connection to the sea, evident in its harbor and historical narratives. The arrival of the Nao Santa María, a replica of one of Columbus's ships, highlights this maritime heritage, offering visitors a chance to step aboard and explore a floating museum. Instagram This connection is also reflected in pubs like the Chapelhay Tavern, which is described as being like a maritime museum itself, filled with nautical memorabilia. Instagram

Historically, Weymouth Harbour has been a significant point of entry. One local history note suggests that the Black Death may have first arrived in Britain via a visitor to Weymouth Harbour in the 14th century. Reddit This rich maritime past is a key element that the Weymouth Museum aims to showcase, even in its temporary exhibition format. Reddit

Beyond the museum, the town's connection to the sea is celebrated through events and attractions. The 'King George's Big Dip' event, for instance, commemorates King George III's historical practice of sea bathing in Weymouth, bringing a splash of culture and history to the town. Instagram

The Evolution of Weymouth Museum

Weymouth Museum has undergone significant changes, with its current iteration being a temporary exhibition while the main building is refurbished. The taster exhibition in St. Thomas Street offers a free entry point for visitors to get a sense of the town's history, featuring local social history, archaeology, and fossils. Reddit

Some visitors recall a previous iteration of the museum that was more engaging, even featuring a 'talking cat' as a guide. Reddit There's a sentiment among some that the current displays, while run by friendly volunteers, could benefit from more funding to do justice to Weymouth's 'rich and interesting history.' Reddit The use of 'replica' items in displays has also been noted as a point of disappointment for some. Reddit

Despite these observations, there's a strong hope that the upcoming refurbished museum will be a 'brilliant local history venue.' Reddit The council's handling of the building that housed the museum has been a point of criticism, with suggestions that it could have been a more prominent local asset. Reddit The temporary exhibition, though limited, serves as a placeholder and a testament to the ongoing effort to preserve and share Weymouth's heritage.
