Hikers rave about the breathtaking beauty of American Lake, calling it a hidden gem with crystal-clear water and stunning mountain views. While the initial steep ascent and demanding descent are challenging, the reward of the pristine alpine scenery and vibrant wildflowers makes it a highly recommended, albeit strenuous, half-day hike. "Be prepared—the first 1.5 miles are the steepest and most challenging part of the entire trail. It gets your heart pumping right away.
Don’t be fooled into thinking the way back will be easy. The descent is just as tough, especially on tired legs. Wear very comfortable, grippy hiking shoes.
Make sure you bring at least 1,5 liter of water per person, especially in the summer heat and elevation. We hiked 7.2 miles total, gained nearly 2,000 feet of elevation, and it took us over 5 hours including breaks.
That said, the views at the lake are breathtaking—totally worth the effort. Crystal-clear alpine water surrounded by dramatic peaks. A must-do if you’re up for a solid workout with a big reward at the top."

"Excellent hiking trail, took us a bit over 4 hours round trip. There is a large parking lot for the trailhead, it was completely empty at 7am, but quite full when we arrived back on a Saturday. The trail is relatively easy (at least compared to Aspen peaks or passes). It is below the tree line, but has good views of surrounding mountains and peaks, and the lake itself is very beautiful. Amazing wildflowers all through the trail. Highly recommended for a nice half day hike."
