I’m moving to Auburn for college, is there anything I should know beforehand?
The university transit system isn't terrible and beats the heck out of paying for crappy parking. Also, check out Kiesel Park!

What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate the Auburn Historic Train Depot for its classic architecture and as a spot for railfanning. However, the extremely limited train schedule (only two services daily) and occasional concerns about safety and the presence of unsavory individuals detract from the experience for some. It's noted that major Amtrak routes do not stop here, requiring travel to other cities.
"Quiet easy station, too bad there is only one train departure per day from here, early in the morning heading out, and late at night returning."

"Great station for railfaning, however note that this station only serves 2 trains in the early morning and evening and most freights go eastbound. Westbounds usually take track 1."

"There is no Amtrak stop here for the California Zephyr that is the main line from Oakland, CA. to Chicago, IL. I guess Auburn's and Amtrak's "Powers That Be" decided long ago this train depot is just for looks and homeless people. You have to board either in Sacramento or Colfax which is 40 miles away in either direction. I find this strange since Auburn is the County Seat and largest city (pop. 20,000+) in Placer County while Colfax has only 2,000- people. Auburn is the last major city heading West over the Sierra Nevada mountains many surrounding communities rely on for services. Way to go Auburn and Amtrak CEO's. Behind the Times and Late as Usual. Stay the Same and Never Change."
