Don’t sit on Black Agnes or evil spirits will curse you! 🫣 A spooky statue named Black Agnes haunts Montpelier’s Green Mount Cemetery. The statue watches over the grave of businessman John Hubbard, who was a disliked man when he died in 1899. Legends claim his grave is cursed, but where did this ghost story come from? ⭐️ John was a businessman with a bad reputation. His rich aunt (with no kids)...

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Green Mount Cemetery for its rich history, beautiful funerary art, and the chance to see graves of famous and infamous figures. It's considered a serene and educational place for a walk, though access requires using an intercom and signing in, and hours can be limited.

"A great graveyard filled with amazing history of not only Baltimore but of the USA! The staff was friendly and showed us how to get to the historical graves.

Seeing John Wilkes Booth, CIA Founder Allen Dulles, General Trimble and John Hopkins are just some of the legends buried here in Green Mount."

"A beautiful place to take a walk on a nice day.

There’s so much history here as well as some famous graves that perhaps make it a destination.
Personally, I loved walking up to the most ornate, over-the-top tombstones (the word doesn’t do it justice) and looked up who those people were in Baltimore / American history. Some great things you’ll learn.

You need only go up to the exterior gate and press the button to be let in. This was strange to me for a cemetery but I understand the purpose."

Jakob W. Plummer

"This is a truly beautiful cemetery with some really interesting examples of funereal art.

It's an easy walk from Penn Station however is gated (do check opening times as they are shorter than other cemeteries). To enter by car or on foot, you use the intercom and they'll open the gate for you and ask you to sign in. Don't do as I did and try and open the door to the office as the sign says (😂), you just need to sign the visitor book which is by the entrance gate.

When I visited they just told me about the QR code which has links to a map however I did see other people with a leaflet map so I think they may offer this on request.

There's a variety of different people buried in the cemetery so you can easily tailor it however I found just walking around really enjoyable and you can easily spend a few hours wandering!"
