What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Hikers consistently praise Black Elk Peak for its challenging yet rewarding trails and breathtaking summit views, often describing it as a must-do in South Dakota. While the climb can be strenuous, the panoramic vistas and the unique fire tower experience make it well worth the effort. Some visitors note that crowds can be significant, and weather can change rapidly, so preparation is key.
"This was a great strenuous hike, but well worth it. It was 87 degrees the day we hiked it. I went with my son. I'm a blood cancer in remission, so breathing was a little hard and am 67. If I can do it you can too. :)"
Greg Martin
"Well worth the climb up. It was a moderately strenuous climb. I would say wear your trail runners for this one. I did climb out on the peak at the end but didn't go out as far as some because I was wearing shorts and your are bouldering it."
Cindy Puzio
"Moderately strenuous in some places but a nice easy stroll in others. Took Trail 4 route to stop at Little Devil’s Tower on the way to the summit. Inclines are tough but totally worth the effort for both, the rock scramble to the top of the tower and the summit. After three or four days of consistent rain, the trail wasn’t in bad shape at all. The views from the top are amazing! Trail 9 would probably be an easier accent but may be too tired for the climb to the top of Little Devil’s. Even treated ourselves to an ice cream cone when we got back to Sylvan Lake! Slow and steady wins the race."
