Small birds nest in corners; they fly low but are generally not aggressive.

"This is an awesome find for anyone who is interested in history or just exploring in general. You can really only see the outside of these forts and whatever you can see through the holes of the buildings or through the fenced off areas. I assume this is because it could be a danger if people were go inside for whatever reason. It's a shame that there is graffiti all over such a neat piece of history.
WARNING: I took this trip in June 2025 and there were A LOT of small birds nesting in the corners of the ceilings. They didn't attack us at all, but they do fly down quite low and will startle you or your young ones. Except to get bit a few time by noseeums. And if it's been raining, there will be wet spots (see photo).
Overall, I'd say this is a 4/5 location to go explore. If going, I would suggest bringing a strong flashlight to see more through the gated off areas."

"Old military fortification converted to a park; Fort Travis was in operation from 1898 to 1949 on this location and boasted two gun emplacements as well as support barracks and logistics.
The old batteries are still in place as well as the concrete foundations of many of the buildings with one old building left and being used as a maintenance shop and office.
There were quite a few families enjoying themselves on the premises with nice views of the water and nearby ferry crossing.
A historical marker tells the history of the site with a fort standing here as early as 1836."

"What an interesting place for anyone who loves American history!! The fort was built and repurposed for multiple Wars over 100 years. Beautiful view and peaceful! Great alternative if you have a rainy day on the beach."
