Seating: A Tale of Two Experiences

While the Emerson Colonial Theatre is stunning, be warned: seating can be cramped, especially for taller individuals. Many Reddit users advise prioritizing orchestra seats or aisle seats for comfort. Recent refurbishments may have improved this, but it's still a common concern.

Timing is Everything for Comfort

To avoid the longest lines and potentially find more comfortable seating, consider attending shows during off-peak times. Weekday evenings or matinees might offer a more relaxed experience. Check for any pre-show events or early access options.

I went into Carousel at the Emerson Colonial Theatre unsure what to expect- I’d read some mixed reviews and didn’t know the music or story. But Boston Lyric Opera’s 80th anniversary production really surprised me. Even though I’m not usually into opera, I stayed engaged the whole time. Anya Matanovič (Carrie) had great comedic timing and facial expressions. Edward Nelson (Billy) gave a strong, em...

Reviews Summary

The Emerson Colonial Theatre is lauded for its stunning historic architecture and the quality of its touring Broadway shows and concerts. Patrons appreciate the grand ambiance and friendly staff. However, a significant drawback for many is the notoriously cramped seating, particularly in the mezzanine and balcony, which can detract from the overall comfort and enjoyment of the performance.

"We went to see mean girls here. Lovely acting, clean seats. Expensive food obviously but not as bad as other theatre's. Great merch shop and friendly staff. Will recommend making bathrooms your top priority at intermission bcs there are very long lines"

Claire Horn

"I really love the historical aspect of this theater and it is beautiful! But oh my god is the seating horrible. I had the worst time trying to get comfortable for the entire first half of the show we saw. I couldn’t help but feel like I was in the way of others with how much I was wiggling around trying to keep my legs from going numb! I am on the heavier side but this place advertised to be accessible for all and even my very average height/weight boyfriend found it extremely uncomfortable and distracting from the show we were here to see! Save yourself the hassle and see the shows at a different theater!! ( I gave two stars because the staff were helpful and let us know we could sit in their “jump seats” which have way more leg room but are very obstructed view compared to the ones we bought.)"

Alyssa

"Such a beautiful theater! It was made in the 1900s and has a lot of historic charm. The staff here was very friendly and helpful while we were looking for our seats and the show was a lot of fun. We sat high up in the stadium type seating and had a great view of the stage."

🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry

Tickets can typically be purchased directly through the official Emerson Colonial Theatre website, authorized ticket retailers like Ticketmaster, or at the theatre's box office. Be wary of unofficial resellers, as prices can be inflated and tickets may not be legitimate. Reddit

The box office hours can vary, but they are generally open on performance days a few hours before the show starts and may have limited weekday hours. It's best to check the official website or call ahead for the most accurate information. Reddit

Keep an eye on the theatre's website and social media for potential discounts, rush tickets, or special promotions. Sometimes, group rates are also available for larger parties. Reddit

Refund and exchange policies are typically set by the show's promoter and the ticketing platform. Generally, tickets are non-refundable unless a performance is canceled or rescheduled. Always review the terms and conditions at the time of purchase. Reddit

🎫 🪑 Onsite Experience

The seating at the Emerson Colonial Theatre has been a point of discussion. While the theatre is beautiful, many patrons, especially those over 5'2", find the legroom to be quite cramped, particularly in the mezzanine and balcony sections. Orchestra seats, especially aisle seats, are often recommended for better comfort. Some recent renovations may have improved this, but it's a common concern. Reddit+2

Outside of the box seats, most seats offer a decent view. However, the horseshoe shape of the balcony can lead to obstructed views at the ends of rows. The primary complaint is not the view, but the lack of legroom, making 'bad' seats more about comfort than sightlines. Reddit

For the best combination of view and sound, many recommend seats in the orchestra section, avoiding the far sides in the front. Some suggest Row N or P on the left side of the orchestra. The front row of the balcony is also mentioned as a decent option if orchestra seats aren't available. Reddit

Some patrons have noted that the theatre can be warm. It's advisable to dress in layers to ensure comfort throughout the performance. Reddit

The stagedoor is typically located around the back of the theatre. If you exit the main doors and turn right, then right again down Tremont Street, you'll find an alleyway just before the Majestic Theatre. This is where the stagedoor is usually situated. Reddit

🍽️ 🍽️ Food & Dining

Yes, the theatre usually offers concessions with snacks and beverages. However, like most theatres, prices can be on the higher side. Reddit

Generally, outside food and beverages are not permitted inside the Emerson Colonial Theatre. It's best to consume any food or drinks before entering the venue. Reddit

The theatre is located in the heart of Boston, surrounded by numerous dining options. You can find everything from casual eateries to upscale restaurants in the nearby Theatre District and Downtown Crossing areas. Consider exploring Boylston Street or Tremont Street for various cuisines. Reddit

The theatre often has bar service available, especially during intermissions. Some shows might offer VIP packages that include access to a lounge area, but this is usually an additional purchase. Reddit

Concession offerings can vary by show and time. While standard options like popcorn and candy are usually available, specific vegetarian or vegan choices might be limited. It's advisable to check with the venue or bring your own snacks if you have specific dietary needs. Reddit

📸 📸 Photography

Photography and videography are generally prohibited during performances at the Emerson Colonial Theatre to avoid disturbing other patrons and the performers. Some venues may allow photography before the show or during the curtain call, but always check the specific show's policy or venue signage. TikTok

The exterior of the Emerson Colonial Theatre looks impressive at any time, but it can be particularly striking at night when the marquee lights are on. Golden hour, just before sunset, also provides beautiful lighting for exterior shots. TikTok

Typically, you can take photos of the stage and your seating area before the performance begins, as long as no flash is used and it doesn't interfere with other guests. However, policies can vary, so it's always best to be discreet and check for any posted rules. Reddit

The grand staircase and the ornate lobby areas are excellent spots for capturing the theatre's historic charm. If permitted, photos from your seat can showcase the unique seating arrangement and stage view. Instagram
