"Buckskin was on our trip around the end of March. We camped just across the road from the trailhead so we could be set up for a few days. It was great. Our PT cruiser has been holding in there going down these BLM roads. At least the trailhead was only 4 miles from highway. Super busy with it being spring break which I totally forgot about. We hiked up to wire pass trailhead and we hitched ride in the back of a pick up. We had a few pools we had to walk through that was almost knee high. Had to put our small dog in the top of my backpack. Our big girl did just fine. Having hiking poles really helped for balancing through the pools. Stay towards the wall!! My girlfriend just turned 70 and she did great. Oh yeah I found out after we already went up the ladder that there is an alternate trail. I had to pick up my 80lb girl and take her up the ladder with my girlfriend holding my bottom up because it was so steep. All the rest of the trail is dog friendly."

"I’m a canyon-lover and Buckskin Gulch absolutely blew me away with its epic, winding slot canyons and surreal rock walls that feel like stepping into another planet, the quiet wilderness vibe is unbeatable and permits limit crowds, but watch for flash floods and be ready for muddy, water-filled stretches and rough trailhead access"

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
Buckskin Gulch is located on the Utah-Arizona border. The most popular access point is via the Wire Pass Trailhead, which requires a rough drive on BLM roads. Many visitors recommend an SUV or truck for this access, though cars can make it with caution.
The drive can be challenging, especially after rain. While some cars can manage, it's slower and tougher. A higher clearance vehicle like an SUV or truck is generally recommended for a smoother journey.
GPS coordinates can be helpful, but it's always wise to have a physical map or download offline maps as cell service can be spotty in the area.
While not widely advertised, some visitors have reported hitching rides back to trailheads from other hikers, especially if doing a one-way trek. Planning for an out-and-back hike is the most reliable option.
Public transportation is not a viable option for reaching Buckskin Gulch due to its remote location. A personal vehicle is necessary.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
Yes, a permit is required to hike Buckskin Gulch. These permits help manage visitor numbers and contribute to the preservation of the area. You can often obtain them online or at designated visitor centers.
Permit costs can vary, but they are generally considered very affordable compared to other slot canyons like Antelope Canyon, often around $6 per person.
Buckskin Gulch is an open natural area, so there are no set operating hours. However, hiking is best done during daylight hours for safety and visibility.
Yes, you can hike Buckskin Gulch independently, but it's crucial to be aware of the risks, especially flash floods. Some hikers opt for tours for added safety, particularly if they don't have satellite communication.
Typically, the permit fee is the primary cost associated with entering Buckskin Gulch. There are no additional park entrance fees like you might find at national parks.
🎫 🥾 Onsite Experience
The Wire Pass to Buckskin Gulch route is a popular day hike, approximately 5.6 miles round-trip. For the full experience, consider the longer 16-mile trek, which may require an overnight stay.
Wear sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes or boots, quick-drying clothing, and consider bringing a dry bag for your electronics. Hiking poles are highly recommended for stability.

Mid-morning to early afternoon often provides the best light filtering down into the canyon, creating dramatic shadows and highlighting the rock colors.
A wide-angle lens is great for capturing the scale of the slot canyon. A sturdy tripod can be useful for low-light conditions. Protect your gear from water and sand.
Drone usage regulations can vary. It's essential to check with local land management agencies (like the BLM) for current rules and restrictions before flying a drone in the area.
Include a person or a recognizable object in your shots to give a sense of scale. Experiment with different angles, looking up towards the sky or down the narrow passages.
Focus on the textures of the sandstone, the patterns of light and shadow, and the narrow, winding passages. The contrast between the dark canyon and the bright sky above is also striking.
For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Opting for the shorter Wire Pass to Buckskin Gulch day hike is often a good starting point for families. Ensure everyone has appropriate footwear, and consider bringing extra dry clothes. The unique environment offers a memorable experience, but safety, especially regarding flash floods, should be the top priority.
💰 Budget Travelers
To maximize savings, consider camping nearby (some sites are available across the road from the trailhead) and packing your own food. The main 'cost' here is your time and preparedness for the hike itself. It offers immense natural beauty for a fraction of the price of guided tours elsewhere.
🐶 Dog Owners
While dogs are welcome, they may struggle with the deeper water sections. Be ready to carry your dog if necessary, especially smaller breeds. Hiking poles can also be helpful for providing stability for your dog if they are walking alongside you. Always ensure your dog is leashed and under control.
Deep Dives
In-depth insights and expert knowledge
Buckskin Gulch vs. Antelope Canyon
Buckskin Gulch is generally more budget-friendly, with permit costs significantly lower than Antelope Canyon tours. This makes it an attractive option for backpackers and budget travelers. However, it requires more self-sufficiency; you'll need to be prepared for potential flash floods and navigate water-filled sections on your own, whereas Antelope Canyon tours handle these safety aspects.
Ultimately, the choice depends on your priorities. If you seek an iconic, easily accessible experience with guaranteed light beams, Antelope Canyon might be your pick. If you prefer a more adventurous, less commercialized, and budget-conscious exploration of a vast, natural wonder, Buckskin Gulch is an exceptional choice.
Navigating Water and Mud
To best navigate these conditions, waterproof hiking boots or water shoes are highly recommended. Many hikers also find trekking poles invaluable for maintaining balance on slippery rocks and in deeper water. Be prepared to get wet, and consider bringing a dry bag for your phone, camera, and other essentials.
Flash floods are a serious concern in slot canyons. If there's any chance of rain in the forecast, even miles away, the canyon can fill rapidly. Always check the weather and be prepared to turn back immediately if conditions seem unsafe. The beauty of Buckskin Gulch is intertwined with its powerful natural forces.
Trailhead Access and Vehicle Recommendations
Many visitors strongly advise using an SUV or a truck with higher clearance to navigate these roads more comfortably and safely. While it's possible for cars to make the journey, it will likely be a slower, bumpier ride, and there's a higher risk of damage.
It's wise to check recent road conditions if possible, as they can change frequently. Having a reliable vehicle will significantly enhance your overall experience and reduce stress before you even begin your hike into the canyon.
