What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Guests often praise the Sideways Inn for its fun movie theme, comfortable rooms, and good amenities like a gym and fire pit. Its location is also a plus for exploring wine country. However, some visitors have noted issues with thin walls and noise, and one review mentioned a car break-in, raising concerns about security.
"We only stayed for only one night as it was a convenient location to Solvang and a stop off point on our road trip from Anaheim to San Francisco. However it was a memorable stay and we enjoyed it very much. The room was big and the bed was comfortable, and we had a great nights sleep after a long drive. For dinner we ate at the nearby California Tacos Cantina and Distillery where I had the best birria tacos ever. In the morning we went to Mother Hubbard’s Restaurant for an excellent Steak and Eggs breakfast.
Also the Sideways Inn has the best hotel gym I’ve ever visited. Barbells and dumbbells, a cable machine with all attachments and of course all the usual cardio equipment.
Complimentary coffee was available in the lobby and the front desk staff were super friendly. I would love to stay here again."

"It’s a cute spot. It has everything that person may need while traveling. Hot jacuzzi opened till 10pm, little cozy restaurant/bar with fire pit, wine/beer available for purchase at the lobby, gym and coffee in the morning. I’d definitely stay here again. Recommend!"

"This is a really cute little inn, and it’s really fun to stay at the motel from the movie. The rooms are decently clean, but could be better. The beds were comfortable, and the comforters weren’t too heavy. The air conditioning worked well too. The coffee they have in the lobby is also really good. Altogether, it’s pretty good."

The Sideways Inn itself, the distinctive windmills and architecture of Solvang, and the rolling vineyard landscapes of the Santa Ynez Valley are prime photo opportunities. Look for iconic road signs and vineyard entrances.
The 'golden hours' – shortly after sunrise and before sunset – offer the most beautiful light for vineyard photography. Midday can be harsh, but still good for town shots.
Drone usage is generally restricted at most wineries and private properties. Always check with the winery management before flying a drone.
A versatile lens like a 24-70mm is great for landscapes and details. A wide-angle lens can capture the expansive vineyard views. Don't forget a polarizing filter for vibrant skies.
Most tasting rooms are fine with photos, but it's polite to ask staff, especially if you're photographing other patrons or sensitive displays. Focus on the ambiance and wine details.
For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider visiting during the day when wineries are more relaxed. Pack snacks and drinks, as tasting rooms are primarily for adults. The drive itself can be scenic, but be prepared for potential car entertainment needs. Exploring the towns and enjoying local treats like Danish aebleskiver in Solvang can make for a fun family outing.
💰 Budget Travelers
Picnicking is a great way to save on food costs. Many wineries have beautiful grounds perfect for a picnic lunch. Pack your own wine or purchase a bottle from a local market. Staying at the Sideways Inn can be a good value, especially if you utilize its amenities like the gym and enjoy the complimentary coffee. Look for deals or book during the off-season for potentially lower accommodation rates.
🍷 Wine Enthusiasts
Don't limit yourself to just the movie's stars. The region also excels in Rhône varietals and other cool-climate grapes. Research wineries based on your preferred varietals and book tasting appointments in advance, especially for limited production wines or special cellar tours. Many wineries offer excellent food pairings that can elevate your tasting experience.
