Timing is Everything

The Burroughs Mountain Trail offers stunning views, but conditions can change rapidly. Check weather forecasts and trail reports before you go, especially outside of peak summer. Snow can linger into July, and early autumn can bring frost. Be prepared for sun exposure as the trail is largely above treeline.

Gear Up for the Summit

This is a challenging hike with significant elevation gain. Sturdy hiking boots are essential, and trekking poles can be a lifesaver on steep or snowy sections. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses) as there's little shade. Layers are key, as mountain weather is unpredictable.

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the unparalleled, up-close views of Mount Rainier from the Burroughs Mountain Trail, describing it as a truly awe-inspiring experience. The vibrant wildflowers in summer and the dramatic alpine scenery are major highlights. However, some hikers note the trail's challenging nature, potential for snow well into summer, and the intense sun exposure, advising thorough preparation.

"7/20/2024: Started 11:30am. Went till the 2nd burrough.
Plan was to go clockwise: Sunrise -> Wonderland Trail -> Burroughs (Saw Shadow Lake en route) -> Frozen Lake -> Sunrise

- Saw one patch of snow before the 2nd burrough. Was relatively easy to go around this one.
- On the way back: saw another patch of snow before frozen lake. Didn't risk it: had to go back down the Shadow Lake path due to the path being very narrow and covered with snow.
- Lots of bugs on the trail
- Very hot
- Lots of people till the first burrough, less on the 2nd

En route the 2nd Burrough: there are some places where the paths are really narrow with steep drops. Be careful if you have acrophobia. Don't go without proper hiking boots and poles if inexperienced.

Views of Mount Rainier throughout the Burroughs trail are unparalleled."

"Relatively moderate hike on the Burrough mountains trail loop (9 miles, 2400 feet total elevation gain). The second and third Burrough mountain offer great views on the northern part of Mt Rainier. Definitely a good alternative or addition if Skyline Trail at paradise is too busy."

Chris W

"Did the hike on July 10, 2022. We passed the frozen lake. This is the junction to Fremont lookout, or Burroughs. Still snow covered trails to the Burroughs, but do-able. We hiked to the second, there is an interesting dome-shaped stoned chair. The view is magnificent. We proceeded hike to the third Burrough, got even closer look. There's summit route!!"
