TIL that the worst hard-rock mining disaster in American history occurred on June 8, 1917 when fire broke out in the Speculator Mine in Butte, Montana. 168 miners were killed due to the unsafe conditions, spurring one of the first successful unionizations of workers in the US.

One of the most interesting books I've read is *Fire and Brimstone* by Michael Punke, author of *The Revenant.* Truly a great book and a must read for anyone interested in the history of unions in the US.
