🍂 ITS HAPPENING. First fall color report of the season. Date: September 13, 2025 Where: Grand Mesa Scenic Byway + Mesa Lakes Okay — not to incite panic, but the west slope has officially started…and it’s right on time. I try and go up to the Mesa either 9/13 or 9/14 every single year to get an idea of how things are shaping up. The typical early season pockets are shining and there’s still lots...

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the stunning natural beauty of Grand Mesa, particularly its unique flat-top geology and the breathtaking fall colors. The abundance of lakes and opportunities for wildlife viewing are frequently highlighted as major draws. Some mention the need for preparedness due to changing weather conditions and potential fees at specific locations.

"Peak Aspen last weekend. Great place to do some hiking...I recommend the mesa lakes hikes to start yourself off in the area! If you don't bring $8 dollars to get in, you can park before entering but need to walk an extra half a mile in."

Jessica Brady

"Very nice ride through this area at the end of August. Island Lake was gorgeous. We did not explore any more than the road but if we are ever in this area again we will check them out!"

Jenny Unternahrer

"What a contrast to Colorado National Monument! We did both drives in one day. Whereas it was 90+ in the monument, it was chilly with snow piles at Grand Mesa. We enjoyed the hike by the visitor center as well as Land-o-Lakes, and the Lands End area, where little ground squirrels will come right up to your hands. I'd recommend taking sunflower seeds along for that fun experience. We saw marmots and deer. It was lovely."
