Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the stunning, accessible alpine scenery and the breathtaking views from high elevations. The easy trails to clear blue lakes are a hit, though some note the initial impact of the 11,000+ foot altitude. It's a perfect spot for a casual hike or a memorable scenic drive.

"Beautiful place to relax and go on a casual hike with stunning scenery to view. The drive is isn't bad at all. I will say pushing that 11,000 feet elevation does add a little extra on the breathing when hiking. I only seemed to notice it when I first got on top of the hill. After a short while I couitell a difference, and I did spend most of the day hiking."

"We did the Lookout Lake Trail. We had great weather and met lots of friendly people along the way. We were very impressed with this trail, as we are not avid hikers."

It's renowned for its dramatic alpine scenery, accessible lakes, and high-elevation vistas. The road is paved and generally well-maintained during its open season, typically from late May or early June through October, depending on snowfall. Travelers often start from Laramie, heading west towards Saratoga, or vice versa. The highest point, Libby Flats, sits at over 11,000 feet, offering unparalleled panoramic views. Instagram+1

It's crucial to be aware of the seasonal nature of this byway. Snow can linger well into June, sometimes making sections impassable or requiring snow gear. Always check the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) road conditions before embarking on your journey. Services are sparse, so ensure your vehicle is fueled up and you have ample food and water. Cell service can be spotty, so downloading offline maps is a wise precaution. Instagram

Beyond the main drive, numerous trailheads and pull-offs invite exploration. These range from short, easy walks to more strenuous climbs. The byway is a gateway to numerous lakes, meadows, and mountain peaks, making it a prime destination for scenic drives, photography, and light recreation. Reddit

Experiencing the High-Altitude Environment

The altitude is a significant factor when visiting the Snowy Range Scenic Byway. With much of the route above 10,000 feet, visitors can experience symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headaches, nausea, and shortness of breath. Dressing in layers is essential, with a waterproof and windproof outer layer being highly advisable. Instagram+1

Photography Opportunities

The Snowy Range Scenic Byway is a photographer's paradise, offering a wealth of stunning landscapes. Mirror Lake is a perennial favorite, known for its mirror-like reflections of the surrounding peaks, especially during calm mornings.
