We had 1 full day to spend in Charlottesville and these are the places we recommend! 📍James Monroe’s Highlands 📍Monticello 📍Michie’s Tavern for lunch! 📍Historic Downtown Mall for shopping/eating/roaming 📍Bodo’s Bagels for breakfast! The like is worth it 👌🏻 and moves fast 😉 • We also would’ve loved to explore the University of Virginia but it was a game day and super crowded. As we left Charlottes...

"We did a walking tour. Our guide Jesse was extremely personable and knowledgeable. The weather was perfect and the breeze smelled like fresh flowers. John in the house was engaging and fun to talk to. And Peggy in the gift shop brightened my day."

"I explored this estate as part of a Charlottesville mini trip. Its a fun place, but also very short. I got in and out in a hour or so. I would say this would be a good idea as an add on (or appetizer) for the bigger Monticello Estate up 53 and/or Montpelier in Orange (about 28 miles north)"

Adam Sisk

"It was cool to learn some of the history of the Monroe's presidency but don't go there expecting to see his home because it's not his home and never lived there. The home there now was built by and was the home of a Confederate Baptist pastor. There is a guest house in the rear that Monroe's slaves built but that's about it. In fact even when he did own the plantation he was rarely there and spent more time at his Loudon County home when be was in the US. To call Highland his home is a stretch at best. He spent most of his time in France, England, Richmond, Washington DC, or his place in Loudon County. Apparently Highland was for the most part just a commercial venture to him and when he left the White House he sold the place and went to his home Loudon.
The ladies that gave the tours, called interpreters, where wonderful and that's why I gave this place three stars because otherwise I would have given it two stars. They do a really nice integrating information about the enslaved community into the larger story of the plantation and I really found that interesting and appreciated that."
