What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking panoramic views from the observation tower, calling it a must-see in the Smokies. The challenging but rewarding paved hike and the unique atmosphere, even in fog, are highlights. However, some find the facilities basic, parking difficult, and the experience can feel crowded and commercialized.
"This is a must see if you are visiting Smoky mountain. Once at the top there are plenty of parking spaces available. After parking there is a decent hike up a paved path up to the Kuwohi observation tower which was known as clingmans dome in the past. It's a steep 10-15 min hike. You can stop and sit many times if hike is an issue. Once at the top the view is amazing. Once you hike down there are 5 restrooms available. Once at the top there may not be data but they have a tower to make emergency phone calls."

"A small hike that leads to an amazing view point. On the observatory, one can see a 360 degrees view of the mesmerising mountains. The stretch of green is soul satisfying provided there is no fog and clouds blocking the view. We had a good time until the mist began to cascade the ranges and envelope the entire mountains."

"Parking was pretty crowded so you will possible have to loop a couple times to find a spot. Only restrooms are vault toilets that were absolutely disgusting. The trail up to the tower was a fairly steep uphill paved path with benches along the way to stop and sit. We went in the afternoon and there was no shade so I’m sure it can get pretty warm in the summer. Going up the tower was easy and the top had stunning views. It felt rather crowded for the small space but everyone was being kind and taking turns taking pictures."

The effort is rewarded with unparalleled 360-degree views from the observation tower. On a clear day, you can see for miles across the rolling Appalachian Mountains. However, be prepared for the possibility of fog, which is very common at this elevation and can dramatically alter the view, sometimes creating a mystical, moody atmosphere.
Understanding the Name Change: Kuwohi
The decision to rename the mountain reflects a broader effort to acknowledge and respect the ancestral lands and heritage of the Cherokee people, who have a deep connection to the Great Smoky Mountains. The observation tower, a prominent landmark, now overlooks a landscape with a name that carries centuries of history.
