Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about Thomas F. Riley Wilderness Park for its natural beauty, diverse trails, and peaceful atmosphere, making it a favorite for photography and outdoor recreation. While parking is affordable and permits for professional shoots are manageable, some may find the trails challenging and should be mindful of sun exposure and wildlife. Reddit

"We absolutely love this location! I had a couple recommended it for their engagement photo session a few years ago and have been revisiting it ever since. We do family sessions, engagements, maternity sessions, and all sorts of little shoots here. You do need a permit in order to shoot here, however, the OC Parks offices make it very easy to obtain. You simply have to supply them with proper insurance, and fill out a few forms and the permit is good for a year. Also, make sure you pay for parking when you arrive because they do check on that (it's only $3). Beyond that, the staff has always been very helpful and courteous to us. We see a lot of people who hike and bike through here and they're all very friendly as well. For photo sessions, I love that you don't have to go on a long hike in order to get the photos you need (which makes our families happy especially with little ones). They close at sunset so be mindful of the time as well"

"Last weekend, I had the pleasure of exploring the beautiful Thomas F. Riley Wilderness Park, a stunning 544-acre natural area located in Orange County, California. With its diverse array of plant and animal species, this park is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to reconnect with nature and enjoy the serenity of the great outdoors.

Upon entering the park, I was immediately struck by the sheer variety of plants that call this place home. Thanks to the Seek by National Geographic app, which I had downloaded prior to my visit, I was able to identify numerous plant species that I encountered along the way. Some of the notable species I found included Coast Morning Glory, Mediterranean Stork's Bill, Hairy Vetch, Coast Live Oak, Foxtail Barley, Weld, Smooth Cat's Ear, Wild Oat, Deerweed, and Hairy Vetchling. Each of these plants contributes to the park's rich and diverse ecosystem, which also supports a plethora of animal species such as deer, coyotes, rabbits, and various species of birds and reptiles.

Thomas F. Riley Wilderness Park offers an extensive network of trails that cater to all levels of hiking enthusiasts. Some of the popular trails include the Wagon Wheel Canyon Loop Trail, the Oak Canyon Trail, the Sycamore Canyon Trail, and the Water Tank Road Trail. Whether you are a seasoned hiker looking for a challenge or a casual walker seeking a leisurely stroll, there is a trail for everyone at this park.

The difficulty of the trails varies from easy to moderate, with some steep inclines and uneven terrain along the way. The Wagon Wheel Canyon Loop Trail, for instance, is a 4.2-mile moderately difficult loop that offers panoramic views of the surrounding canyons and hills. The Oak Canyon Trail, on the other hand, is an easier 1.3-mile out-and-back trail that takes you through a picturesque oak woodland.

Depending on your pace and level of experience, the time it takes to complete each trail can vary. Generally, the shorter trails such as the Oak Canyon Trail can be completed in about 1 hour, while the longer and more challenging trails like the Wagon Wheel Canyon Loop Trail can take anywhere from 2 to 3 hours to complete.

Thomas F. Riley Wilderness Park also offers the convenience of on-site dirt parking, ensuring that visitors can easily access the park's natural beauty. The parking fee is a reasonable $3 for a full day, which provides ample time to explore the various trails and immerse yourself in the park's diverse flora and fauna. Keep in mind that the park operates from sunrise to sunset, so plan your visit accordingly to make the most of your day.

While exploring the park, I couldn't help but notice the abundance of ant hills scattered throughout the area. These fascinating structures serve as a reminder of the park's thriving ecosystem and the interconnectedness of its various species. Remember to tread carefully and respectfully around these small yet vital inhabitants of the park, as they play an essential role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem.

With its wide range of trails, diverse plant and animal life, and convenient amenities like dirt parking, Thomas F. Riley Wilderness Park truly offers an unparalleled outdoor experience for visitors. So, pack your hiking boots, bring your curiosity, and get ready to discover the wonders of this unique natural sanctuary.

Overall, my visit to Thomas F. Riley Wilderness Park was an unforgettable experience. The park's diverse plant and animal life, coupled with its well-maintained network of trails, makes it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts alike. I highly recommend spending a day at this park to experience the beauty and serenity of the great outdoors."

"Very remote and uncrowded. I went on a Wednesday and my car was the only car there. I did not see anybody else. It's a beautiful park near Coto de Caza. I highly recommend it for wilderness hiking or running, but I recommend awareness as it seems like the kind of place where mountain lions visit."
