What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Guests rave about the comfortable and clean cabins at Blue Bell Lodge, often highlighting the exceptional service and delicious food, especially the burgers. The lodge's location within Custer State Park is praised for its beauty and proximity to wildlife. Some minor drawbacks include limited services at the lodge store and a less secluded feel than anticipated for some cabins.
"We had an absolutely wonderful time at the Blue Bell Lodge. It definitely made our visit to the Black Hills a fantastic experience. We stayed in a cabin and it was absolutely beautiful. Clean and beautifully decorated. Best of all the beds were extremely comfortable and our experience overall was fantastic. I also have to say that the restaurant was wonderful and the food was delicious. Every single employee that we came in contact with was absolutely wonderful, and we truly enjoyed the hayride and chuckwagon experience."
Susan Borden
"Loved the location. So quiet and beautiful. We had a bit of a hiccup with our cabin during our stay, and the staff was very responsive and went above and beyond to make it right. Better service than we have gotten at high end hotels 😏."
Susan Koontz
"Blue Bell is my go-to place when staying in Custer State Park. The cabins are extremely clean, nicely spaced apart to give you privacy and that in-the woods feeling, without feeling too isolated. Great location for visiting other areas in and around the park. We didn't go on the cookout ride this time, or horseback riding, but have done so in the past and would highly recommend both! And the staff is great, from making reservations to check-in. Thanks, Blue Bell for making our visit one we will always cherish!"

Cabin Comforts and Considerations
While the cabins themselves are well-regarded, the lodge's services have mixed reviews. The on-site store is primarily for souvenirs and lacks essential items like firewood or camping supplies, and its opening hours can be inconvenient for early risers. This means planning ahead for any necessities is crucial. Despite these minor drawbacks, the overall sentiment is that the cabins provide a cozy and convenient accommodation option for those visiting Custer State Park.
Culinary Delights and Dining
Beyond the exceptional burgers, the lodge also offers unique dining experiences like the chuckwagon dinner. This is frequently recommended as a must-do activity, providing a memorable evening of food and entertainment. While the restaurant is a highlight, the lodge store's limited food offerings mean that for breakfast or snacks, visitors might need to bring their own supplies or plan to eat elsewhere if they have early morning activities. The park itself shuts down services by 8 PM, so evening dining options outside of the lodge restaurant are scarce.
Experiencing Custer State Park's Wildlife
Beyond the self-guided drives, the lodge offers organized activities that enhance wildlife viewing and park immersion. The hayride and chuckwagon dinner are particularly popular, offering a unique way to experience the park's atmosphere and potentially encounter wildlife in a guided setting. These experiences are highly recommended by past guests for their entertainment value and connection to the park's heritage. Remember that wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but the park's diverse habitats increase your chances of seeing a variety of animals.
