On Monday, May 1st we lost singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot who was behind the beloved song The Wreck or the Edmund Fitzgerald. At the end of that song he mentions a “musty old hall in Detroit” which is this building, the 175 year old Mariner’s Church in downtown Detroit, where they rang the bell 29 times to honor the loss of all 28 sailors aboard the vessel. Yesterday they rang the bell 30 time...

Replying to @tyson.dean.walker This is footage from the memorial sent to me by my friend @Amy Elliott Bragg — I added titles for context, but did not want to talk over the bells. I hope you and your friends in Canada enjoy it. He was indeed a great man and a wonderful storyteller.

Reviews Summary

Mariners' Church is lauded for its deep connection to maritime history, particularly its role in commemorating the Edmund Fitzgerald tragedy through the ringing of its bell. Visitors appreciate its status as one of Detroit's oldest buildings and its welcoming atmosphere for all faiths. Some reviews note a patriarchal element in its historical imagery, though recent sermons have been praised for inclusivity.

"Rustic. Mariner’s Cathedral is a must visit for anyone interested in Detroit history. Popularized in the Gordon Lightfoot song The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald this small house of worship is more than a one hit wonder. An Anglican Church that opens its doors to all faiths and has lovely acoustics for its choir and organ. The current rector was kind and welcoming and even provided a good sermon. I think my favorite thing about this place was the comfort and prayer it has provided over its 100 plus years of service to all people but especially the sailors of the Great Lakes."

"Very epic looking church in the downtown of Detroit, MI. What my American friend told me about it is this church was founded in 1842 and is the 2nd oldest church in Detroit. With this historical statue of George Washington located at the side of the church it looks even more monumental and epic."

Krzysiek Olecha

"We were looking for a church that was different from our old one (recently retired). We chose to go to the oldest church in the Detroit area, Mariners’ Church. What a history! I’ve always loved ‘The Wreck of the Edmond Fitz Gerald’ (sp) and this church represents that exact song. Although a very patriarchal church run by all older white gentlemen and full of male portraits in their stained glass windows, the SERMON, on Easter Sunday 2023 was about the first disciple, the first person to lay eyes on the risen Christ, Mary!!!!! God bless them for that!!! Finally someone willing to speak truth to power. Thank you!"
