What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate the natural beauty of South River Picnic Area, particularly the scenic South River Falls Loop Trail and the opportunity for wildlife spotting. However, some reviews mention concerns about the upkeep of facilities and potential vehicle damage from falling nuts.
"Its a darn shame that this land was taken from my family and is being let go like it is. We used to enjoy coming up here to see it being preserved and kept nice. Now its not mowed, fire pits gone, bathrooms and running water been put out if service. My 82 year old grandma who's family had her land stolen had to go into a porta potty. Piss poor that its being let go like it is and being charged $55 for a pass to come to this . Sad !!"

"We stopped here for a nice picnic. The wife, aka J-La made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Word of caution, you don’t wanna park near the middle area because there are some sort of nuts dropping from the trees, and they can damage your vehicle. The area is nice. There are restroom facilities here, in the form of extravagant outhouses…"

"Growing up at the foot of the Skyline Drive, I've taken this beautiful area for granted, having had easy access to it all my life. We picnicked as a group today at the South River Picnic area, right next to the falls trailhead. There were lots of open picnic tables today, probably due to the cooler temperatures. However, as Fall approaches, I'm sure that will not be the case. The Drive gets around 1.2 million visitors a year, mostly during the colorful Autumn. It's beautiful! Today, we encountered an Appalachian Trail (AT) thru hiker on his way to Georgia and invited him to join us. After eating trail food for days, who's going to turn down fried chicken? There is wildlife to be seen. Deer, chipmunks, and maybe a bear, if you're lucky. Please follow the posted rules for your safety and theirs. Enjoy!"
