What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Fieldston is praised as a lovely, exclusive neighborhood with stunning and diverse architecture, set within a beautifully planned, natural landscape. Visitors appreciate the unique street design and the peaceful atmosphere, though it's important to remember it's a private residential area. Some find parking challenging.
"The Fieldston neighborhood in Riverdale, Bronx was originally part of the Fieldston estate owned by the Delafield family. When the metro system came to nearby Van Cortland Park in 1908, the Delafield family saw a real estate opportunity. Engineer Albert E. Wheeler was hired to divide the land into lots for individual houses, but following the advice of Frederick Law Olmstead, the streets and lots followed the curves of the rocky, wooded terrain.
Homes originally had to be built in one of the popular styles of the time such as Tudor, Mediterranean, or Medieval Revival. The first homes were completed in 1911 with many more made over the following 30 years. Most of the neighborhood was declared a historic district in 2006. It is an exclusive, private neighborhood that also contains three private schools."

Architectural Styles to Discover
Another significant style present is Mediterranean Revival. These homes often feature stucco exteriors, red tile roofs, arched windows and doorways, and sometimes decorative ironwork, bringing a touch of sunny European flair to the Bronx. You'll also find examples of Medieval Revival architecture, which draws inspiration from European castles and manor houses, often incorporating stone elements, crenellations, and a robust, imposing presence.
