Strawberry Hill Wayside- near Florence, OR It wasn’t even a negative low tide on the day we visited, but there was so much to see at this beach. Look for creatures around the big rock formations. My boys also loved playing in the waves and exploring the sea caves. Remember to use good tide pool etiquette: don’t pick up or move anything, leave no trace, walk carefully. + Small parking lot + No pa...

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Strawberry Hill Wayside as a 'hidden gem' on the Oregon Coast, particularly for its fascinating tide pools and dramatic ocean views. The opportunity to see diverse marine life at low tide is a major highlight. However, the extremely limited parking and steep, challenging trail down to the beach are frequently mentioned drawbacks.

"Strawberry Hill Wayside is a wonderful place to pull over and take in the views. There's a steep trail with stairs that leads down to an area with rocks and the ocean.

It's super cool down at the end of the trail, though keep an eye on the tides as they can come up pretty high during high tide. There's sometimes sand to the north, and during the summertime there is occasionally bioluminescence on this part of the coast.

If you're exploring the rugged Oregon Coast, this spot is definitely worth a visit."

For Different Travelers

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

Strawberry Hill Wayside offers a fantastic, albeit brief, adventure for families. The main draw is the chance to explore tide pools during low tide, where kids can marvel at sea stars, anemones, and other small marine creatures. It's an excellent educational opportunity to teach children about ocean ecosystems. Reddit

Key tips for families: Ensure children wear sturdy, non-slip shoes as the trail is steep and can be slippery. Pack snacks and drinks, as facilities are minimal. Keep a close eye on children, especially near the water and on the rocky terrain. Visiting during low tide is essential for the best tide pool experience. Be prepared for limited parking and consider visiting on a weekday to avoid crowds.

🚶‍♀️ Solo Travelers & Photographers

For solo travelers and photographers, Strawberry Hill Wayside provides a dramatic and inspiring coastal landscape. The rugged cliffs, crashing waves, and the potential for stunning sunsets offer endless photographic opportunities. The solitude of a weekday visit or an early morning exploration can be particularly rewarding. Instagram

Recommendations: Bring a wide-angle lens for sweeping ocean vistas and a macro lens for capturing the intricate details of tide pool life. A tripod is highly recommended for sunset shots or if you're lucky enough to witness bioluminescence. Be mindful of the steep and potentially slippery trail, and always check tide times to maximize your exploration and photography window. The limited parking means an early start is often best.

Strawberry Hill Wayside is a great spot to bring your leashed dog for a beach exploration. The sandy and rocky areas provide space for them to roam and enjoy the coastal air. It's a refreshing stop on a road trip along the Oregon Coast. Reddit

Important considerations: Always keep your dog on a leash to ensure their safety and respect for wildlife and other visitors. Be aware of the tide; the beach can become narrow and wet during high tide. Ensure your dog is comfortable with steep, uneven terrain and potentially strong ocean winds. Remember to clean up after your pet.

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Exploring the Tide Pools

Strawberry Hill Wayside is renowned for its accessible tide pools, especially during a negative low tide. These natural rock formations create miniature ecosystems teeming with life. Visitors can expect to see a variety of marine creatures, including colorful sea stars, anemones, mussels, barnacles, and small crabs. It's a fantastic opportunity for families and nature enthusiasts to observe these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat. Remember to tread carefully and avoid disturbing the delicate balance of these environments. InstagramReddit

When exploring, always check the tide charts beforehand. A negative low tide is crucial for revealing the most abundant marine life. The rocky terrain can be slippery, so wearing appropriate footwear with good traction is essential. It's also important to practice responsible tide pooling: observe from a distance, do not remove any creatures from their homes, and leave the area as you found it. This ensures that these natural wonders can be enjoyed by future visitors. Instagram

Navigating the Terrain and Access

Accessing the beach at Strawberry Hill Wayside involves a steep trail that combines stairs, gravel, and sandy sections. While not an extreme hike, it requires a moderate level of fitness and good balance. The path can be slippery, especially after rain or with sea spray. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good grip are highly recommended to prevent slips and falls. Reddit

Parking is a significant challenge here, with a very small lot that fills up quickly, particularly during the summer months and on weekends. Visitors are advised to arrive very early in the morning or consider visiting on a weekday to increase their chances of finding a spot. If the lot is full, you may need to find parking in nearby towns like Yachats or Florence and potentially walk or arrange alternative transport, though public transport is scarce. Reddit

Coastal Wildlife and Potential Bioluminescence

Beyond the tide pools, Strawberry Hill Wayside offers opportunities to spot larger wildlife. Seals are often seen lounging on the offshore rocks, and various seabirds, including birds of prey, can be observed soaring overhead. The rugged coastline itself is a draw, with waves crashing against the dramatic rock formations. Reddit

During the summer months, there's a chance of witnessing bioluminescence along this part of the coast. This magical phenomenon occurs when microscopic marine organisms emit light. While not guaranteed, seeing the ocean glow at night is an unforgettable experience. If you're visiting in the summer and conditions are right, staying after sunset might reward you with this natural spectacle. Reddit
