Visited Crack in the Ground and stopped by Fort Rock for a quick hike. One of the most underrated areas in Oregon, imo.

Was thinking about visiting the area. Any tips or must see places? Also, how hospitable is the area for dogs?

Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently awed by the dramatic geological formations of Fort Rock, describing it as a stunning natural landmark rising from the high desert. The hike to the southwest high point is a favorite for its panoramic views. While the natural beauty and historical significance are highly praised, some visitors have noted issues with restroom cleanliness.

"Its worth the stop. You can get some pretty amazing pictures and memories here. Walking around can become more challenging in some parts of the rim if you have health issues. Its free!, there are well maintained rest rooms and a host in a trailer on the site."

Dave Korpi

"We visited hole in the ground east of here and realized this was very closeby. As we drove closer, it looked so amazing standing tall from the Oregon platlands. As we entered, it was not just beautiful but awesome. How big of a fort this really was like a big circle with the opening for entrance. We love all the interesting rock formations and different paths to hike. Our favorite was the hike to the highest part southwest of the park. A little steep at times, but nothing anyone can't handle. If I had to choose only one path, this would be it. You get the best views all around the park from here."

Davin

"Like a desert mirage, this National Natural Landmark rises huge out of the barren, immense flatness of Oregon's high desert. An enormous near-circle of towering jagged rock walls make it seem like a fort. Hike around and you'll soon realize it's even bigger than it looks! It's an old tuff ring set in what was a shallow sea in prehistoric times. As you walk around inside, imagine the early American Indians who canoed to and from what was then an island. Sandals found in a nearby cave are the oldest ever discovered, dating back around 9,350-10,500 years."
