What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Sacred Heart Catholic Church for its breathtaking architecture and serene spiritual atmosphere. Many highlight its historical significance and resilience, noting the beauty of both the exterior and interior details. The adjacent Rosary Park is also a cherished spot for quiet reflection.
"So beautiful! With all its ornate details. The Bishops Palace (currently under renovations) is across the street on one side of Sacred Heart Church, and across a little street on the other side of the Church there is a tiny park with a white picket fence around it that has a brick path in the shape of a Rosary that circles around a shrine of the Blessed Mother Mary. There's nothing else but a bench in the little park. It was peaceful and nice to see in addition to the Church and Palace."

"Beautiful church that catches the eye when passing down Broadway. The original structure was built in 1892 but destroyed in 1900. This building was built in 1903-1904, damaged in 1915 but restored soon after.
The historical marker relating these facts was erected here in 1981.
Another marker describes the life of Marius Etienne Chataignon, a native of France who came to Galveston and served in the US Army in World War I, in Africa and Italy in World War II and retired in 1953 from the Army. He served here at this church, founded a boys school, and supported the community until 1957."
