Time traveling with postcards. Pictured is President Ulysses S. Grant seated in his favorite chair on the porch of Grant Cottage in Wilton, NY shortly before his death in 1885 from throat cancer. When Grant's health rapidly started to decline from throat cancer, Joseph Drexel invited him to Mount McGregor and use of his hotel's cottage so that he and his family might find some respite and solace...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Ulysses S. Grant Cottage for its historical authenticity and the passionate, knowledgeable staff who bring the story of Grant's final days to life. The preserved original artifacts and the stunning views from the Eastern Outlook are frequently highlighted as exceptional aspects of the visit. "Great historical site right here in upstate NY. Donna, our guide, was very very informative. You could tell she enjoys and has passion for this subject. 5 stars for her. The site is as advertised, holding original artifacts and insight into the last days of one of America's greatest leaders. Standing in the spot on the Eastern Outlook where Grant last viewed the valley, is in itself amazing. The beauty of the rolling landscape, the valley, the mountains. Awe inspiring. Coupled with the knowledge that Gen. Grant himself was there before his passing. I'm that spot, The thoughts he must of had while looking out upon the land. Just amazing and sort of surreal. Then looking inside the cottage, where he took his last breaths.. highly recommend. Would love to be back to do the longer tour. Thank you to those who keep this hidden landmark running."

"Incredible place with many wonderful and educational events for the whole family. Strongly recommend a tour of the house, it is almost entirely original/as it was and is a nonprofit not affiliated with any governmental body! The visitor center is full of educational signs and beautifully preserved artifacts. The tour guides are all wonderful & not shy to discuss the nature of the General's illness. The grounds are free to walk and provide beautiful hiking trails with many benches and educational signage! If I could marry a museum, it would be this one! Everyone there knows me now, I go to every event I can, though it is about 3 and 1/2 hours from me & requires me to go through Worcester, Hartford, and Albany!"

"Visited on a very rainy day with only one other couple. The staff were attentive and happy to have you there. Highly recommend the living history tour - Ben was great as Grant's son and added a lot of context and fun personal stories to round out the family man that was the war hero and politician we knew. The fact that so much of the cottage was original and the furniture and artifacts were actually used by Grant and somehow preserved for over 100 years is ASTOUNDING. Absolutely worth a stop."
