Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center for its engaging exhibits, friendly volunteers, and unique live animal encounters, especially the baby alligator. The pollinator garden is a beautiful highlight. However, the limited operating hours, particularly the lack of weekend access and early closing, are a significant drawback for many potential visitors.

"• We visited on a Tuesday afternoon late in December 2023 (day after Christmas). There were plenty of parking spaces and only one other group with us there the whole time.
• They have a small gift shop with a few merch items. Wish they had more stuff branded for their site but mainly hats when we visited. They also have a couple snakes in there to look at.
• We did get the Blue Goose Cancellation Stamp at the front desk.
• The two volunteers running the visitor center were great and super engaging with our kids. They had a fun time doing the scavenger hunt activity in the exhibits. The exhibits themselves were very well done similar to those at Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery in KY. They easily spent 30 mins in there looking at everything.
• The volunteers let us meet Elvis the alligator and even pet him. He’s a baby alligator they keep in the back room for education and outreach. There were also 2 box turtles in this room.
• It was actively raining so we didn’t go on any of the outdoor trails or anything but spent close to an hour exploring inside the visitor center itself.
• We would definitely visit again if we were in the area to explore more of the grounds."

"Beautiful place to fish or walk a short nature trail. There is a pollinator garden on property where you can usually see butterflies, dragonflies, and bees. You can enjoy a picnic at the picnic tables, enjoy views of the lake from the rocking chairs behind the building. Nice educational displays of local animal residents and history. At this time, the building is off limits to visitors, but guests can enjoy the outdoors. The refuge is not open weekends which makes it difficult for traditional working families to enjoy as they also close the gates at 4:00 when most school children are just getting home from the bus."

"Dropped by here to explore a bit and walked the short trail leading out from the parking lot (lots of parking spaces) away from the visitor center then the short trail to the visitor center and toured the Butterfly garden area. Should be pretty later in the year when the flowers are in bloom."
