Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the monument's raw, untamed beauty and spectacular, wide-open views, calling it breathtaking and a highlight of their Utah trips. The lack of crowds compared to national parks is a major draw, offering a sense of peace and solitude. However, the remote nature means limited services and the need for self-sufficiency, with flash flood risks in slot canyons being a significant concern.

"Visited on 9.22.2025 and experienced the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument on Utah Highway 12 from Bryce Canyon National Park to Capitol Reef National Park. The changes in the landscapes are amazing and offer spectacular views!! Highly recommend to anyone visiting Utah."

Rick White

"Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument is absolutely breathtaking. The sheer cliffs, dramatic drop-offs, and wide-open views are unforgettable. I even saw free-range cows roaming, which made the experience feel so unique and wild. Sunsets here are incredible, and while it’s definitely more off the beaten path, it’s 100% worth the trip."

Amy Allred

"Loved Escalante! If you are going to Southern Utah, this needs to be on your bucket list! We did lower calf creek falls early and we only saw maybe 5-10 people as we were headed back to the car! Saw really cool wildlife like ducks, song birds, trout, and even an otter! We also did peekaboo and spooky slot canyons! Definitely save the offline map on your phone (it’s easy to get lost) and have a ton of water! The high was only 70*F the day we went and I felt like I was dying! I do not recommend people do peekaboo and spooky if they are bring pets or small children and if you are not physically fit! It was difficult for sure!"

Navigating the Hole in the Rock Road

The Hole in the Rock Road is a legendary, unpaved artery stretching over 60 miles into the heart of Grand Staircase-Escalante. It's not for the faint of heart or standard sedans. Expect washboards, rocks, and potential mud after rain. TikTok Many popular trailheads, including those for Peekaboo and Spooky Slot Canyons, are accessed from this road. TikTok It's crucial to check current road conditions with the local BLM office before venturing out, as conditions can change rapidly. TikTokReddit Unlike national parks, ranger presence is minimal, so your vigilance is paramount. Reddit

Understanding the Monument's Status and History

Established in 1996 by President Clinton, the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is the largest national monument in the contiguous United States, spanning over 1.8 million acres. TikTok Its designation was controversial, sparking debate over land use and preservation. The monument is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which differs from the National Park Service in its approach to land management, often allowing for a wider range of activities like grazing and hunting. Reddit

The region holds deep cultural significance for Native American tribes. In recent years, an Inter-Tribal Coalition has formed, comprising representatives from six tribes, to advocate for the protection of the monument's cultural and natural resources. TikTok This coalition works to ensure that the monument's heritage is respected and preserved for future generations. Understanding this context adds another layer to the visitor experience, reminding us of the land's long and complex history. TikTok

Key Aspects:

* Vastness: Its sheer size means it's less crowded than many national parks, offering a more remote experience. Instagram
* BLM Management: Allows for diverse recreational activities, but also means fewer visitor services compared to NPS sites. Reddit
* Cultural Heritage: The land is sacred to Indigenous peoples, and their ongoing connection is vital. TikTok
