What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Great Wolf Lodge Gurnee offers a fun-filled water park experience that many families rave about, with themed rooms adding to the excitement. However, some guests have noted issues with cleanliness, unexpected fees like parking, and the high cost of on-site dining, leading to mixed reviews.
"It was the best trip ever. When you walk through those front doors, you know you are in for an exciting adventure. Every part of the building has so many creative decorations. And the water park was amazing. Lodges are amazing with comfy bunk beds for kids with excellent room service. Would recommend for a nice vacay will definitely be here again."

"We had a great time and the rates were relatively reasonable. Once inside we got checked in and our room was ready in advance of the time advised. It was nice to be able to let the kids roam while us adults did our own thing.
We got the fun and food pass for the group which was super worth it as a whole, I highly recommend it.
The food at Hungry as a Wolf was surprisingly good. Jesi was so helpful and patient with us while we were ordering our food when we had questions. Super willing to take care of us, even went the extra mile to tell us what to expect when it was done. Thank you Jesi!"

"I was disappointed with my stay here. Compared to the great wolf lodge in Cincinnati, it really fell short in some critical ways. First, they surprise you with a $19/day parking fee that I don’t remember seeing anywhere. That’s charged right when you check in. Then, I went to exit the lot, and my wristband with my $60 of preloaded parking didn’t work. That was very frustrating. When my wife went to the front desk, they weren’t very helpful and tried to play dumb to get us to pay another $19. After prodding them to confirm we in fact already paid it, they admitted there are wristband issues and got us another one that did work as intended. The gaslighting was pretty low, though.
Then, there’s the room. We got a suite so we were hoping it would be nice. It wasn’t even clean. We had to ask them to reclean the showers because there were clumps of hair and filth sitting in plain sight. The paint on the baseboards and cabinets was peeling. And the carpet looked like it had never been vacuumed. Oh, and there’s no towel racks. You’d think for $500/night I could hang my towel somewhere. Lastly, only come here in the colder months. The A/C took at least 12 hours to cool the room from when we got in. Again, for the cost, why not have the room at a reasonable temp?
The water park itself was good, though. Big enough. But they do nickel and dime you. Not sure if I’ll go back. Not really worth $500/night to stay in a dirty room with rude staff."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Young Children
Consider purchasing the MagiQuest wand if your children enjoy interactive games, but be aware of the cost. Alternatively, focus on the water park and other free lodge activities. The convenience of having everything on-site means less stress and more quality family time.
💰 Budget Travelers
Evaluate the necessity of add-on activities like MagiQuest. If your budget is tight, focus on enjoying the water park, which is included with your stay. Consider if a day pass might be more economical if you live nearby and only want to experience the water park.
couples
Consider booking a suite with a separate living area for more personal space. To enhance the experience, explore dining options outside the lodge in the Gurnee area for a more varied culinary experience. If you're looking for a romantic escape, this might not be the primary choice, but it can be a fun, casual retreat.

Navigating the Water Park Experience
Pro Tip: Arrive early or stay late to avoid the biggest crowds. Weekday mornings are generally the least crowded times. Be aware that some of the more intense slides have height restrictions, so check those before you get in line. The water temperature is kept consistently warm, making it enjoyable year-round.
Maximizing Your Stay: Beyond the Slides
For families looking to save, consider bringing your own snacks and some meals. While the on-site dining options are convenient, they can be pricey. Packing breakfast items, lunch sandwiches, and snacks can significantly reduce your overall spending. The rooms, often themed suites, are designed for family comfort with bunk beds and ample space.
Understanding the Value Proposition
However, it's important to manage expectations regarding cost and potential downsides. Some reviews mention mixed cleanliness standards and additional fees like parking that can increase the overall expense. While the water park is a highlight, some visitors feel the value proposition might be better elsewhere, especially if they are not utilizing all the available activities. Researching deals and considering off-peak times can help make the experience more budget-friendly.
