Sand Island Beach Park is praised as a hidden gem for its peaceful atmosphere and lack of crowds, offering a welcome alternative to busier beaches. However, some note that the park's structures are aging and the beach can be rocky, requiring reef shoes for swimming.
"Hidden gem. This may ruin it for those of us who enjoy a peaceful uncongested beach experience. Parking is always good, bathrooms are in service, and it's the only place I've seen monk seals. My first choice for a chill beach day."

"Great beach! A lot quieter than alamoana, but just as large with picnic tables, BBQ pits, toilets, showers, fields, and plenty of parking. It's a lot more run down than others areas, but it's worth it for lesser crowds. The beach is pretty rocky, and you may have to walk or drive down further west to go swimming. Nice quiet surf spot, too, with not that far of a paddle."

"This place is nice for hikes and to hang at a beach that isn’t very crowded. They have a place for chess tournaments. There were a lot of folks playing frisbee golf. The only reason I give a 4 star is because all the structures are just rotting away including the bathrooms. They have set up port a potties outside these amazingly built bathrooms. It’s sad to see the funding isn’t there to fix some of the stuff that’s broken at this park. Not much shade unless you sit under the chess pavilion. Also this place makes you want to look up it’s history as it has this layout that is so strange and old building. There’s a thing called the sand park stop and it looks like a bench for a train platform. There’s random huge cement blocks in the way some of the paths and huge boulders around others. I need to find out why because most those were just so odd and so outta place.
Definitely would suggest for a sunny walk."
