Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the Indio Hills Badlands Trail for its stunning desert scenery, unique rock formations, and accessible slot canyons, making it a fantastic family-friendly outing. While generally well-marked and free to access, hikers should be prepared for intense sun exposure and bring ample water. Some caution is advised regarding valuables in the parking area.
"The Indio Badlands Trail was an awesome surprise and a great outing for me and my two kids. It’s the perfect mix of adventure, scenery, and accessibility, especially if you’re looking for something fun and outdoorsy near Indio. We packed snacks and plenty of water, which I definitely recommend, because the sun can get intense and there isn’t much shade along the way. The trail itself is well-marked and easy to follow, and the landscape is stunning—dramatic ridges, sandy pathways, and those classic desert colors that change as the light shifts.
One of the highlights for my kids was the opportunity to climb the rocks. There are several spots that are totally manageable for younger hikers but still feel exciting and “big” to them. They had a blast scrambling up and exploring while still staying safe and within sight. The elevation gains are mild, so the hike never felt overwhelming, and we were able to go at a relaxed family pace.
Overall, the Indio Badlands Trail is a fantastic family friendly adventure. It’s scenic, fun, and just challenging enough to make you feel like you earned those snacks at the end. We would absolutely go again!"

"A really nice hike with awesome views over the Coachella Valley, of the unique rock formations in the badlands, and once you reach the very top, views of the hills of Joshua Tree NP. The trail is well-marked. Pretty much a lollipop configuration trail. The are boulders to climb, sandy stretches, and slots. Not much protection from the sun, especially when hiking the first mile in and then the last mile out. out across the wide open valley. Be sure to bring plenty of water, wear sunscreen and a hat, use hiking boots and poles. We downloaded the trail beforehand, but you are up around the cell towers most of the time, so coverage wasn’t really an issue. We stopped for lunch and just enjoy the views at the top, otherwise might have shaved off a half hour from total time. It’s a lovely place to ‘escape’ the city without having to drive very far."

"Great trail and a pretty good workout, especially if it’s a bit warm. Bring plenty of water! Nice little parking area but there were some shady people casing the parking lot. I think they stole a guy’s hat he forgot. I wouldn’t leave any valuables in sight."
