What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often praise MONA as a pleasant surprise, highlighting its free admission, beautiful historic building, and the impressive collection of Nebraska artists. The recent renovation has significantly enhanced the space, making it a modern and airy cultural hub. However, some reviewers note a strong focus on modern art, with a preference for more traditional works to be displayed.
"What a pleasant surprise in an otherwise non-exciting town, at least that we've been able to find. Beautiful building, serene atmosphere, plenty of art to view and exhibit many Nebraska talents of old. Beautiful art displays, clean building, FREE entry, probably not very entertaining to easily bored kids or small children. Recommend if you're in the area, would be worth a small detour."
Nate Garrard
"A wonderful facility, now i can understand why it took so long to remodel.
The staff at the front entrance was amazing, so helpful and very kind.
Now for the bad news.
For the life of me, I cannot understand how the focus became 95% modern art. The vault has hundreds of works of traditional art just setting on racks in the basement. It is clear the curator has a biased bent towards modern art and has no respect for traditional works by Nebraska artist. I can, and I do appreciate modern art, I know and believe it has a place in every museum. Having said this, perhaps a name change should be in consideration at this point. (MONA) Museum of Nebraska Art. Should now be renamed Nebraska Museum of Modern Art or (NMOM).
PS: There is certainly enough room to incorporate more works of art throughout the gallery. Room is not the issue - now. It all comes down to taste."

"Great variety of art from Nebraska artists. Spent about an hour wandering the rooms. Very interesting quilt art. Friendly staff. Comfortable visit."

Navigating the Art Collection: Modern vs. Traditional
Some visitors, however, express a desire for more traditional works to be displayed. Reviews mention that a substantial collection of traditional art by Nebraska artists is stored in the museum's vault. This has led to discussions about the museum's curatorial direction and whether a name change to better reflect its modern focus might be considered by some.
Despite these differing perspectives, the variety of media—including paintings, sculptures, photography, and textiles—ensures there's something to engage most art enthusiasts. The museum's goal is to foster an appreciation for the breadth of artistic expression from Nebraska, encouraging dialogue and contemplation on what it means to be a Nebraskan through art.
