Nestled in the foothills of the Oregon mountains in Las Cruces, New Mexico is this La Cueva (the cave) trail. Apaches used the cave as refuge in the 18th and 19th centuries. Later, Giovanni Maria Agustini (The Hermit) moved in and lived out the last of his life here. Have you done this hike? #lascruces #newmexico #hermit #lacueva

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Kilbourne Hole for its unique geological features and the adventure of exploring a volcanic crater, especially for off-roading and peridot hunting. However, many are disappointed by the significant amount of litter and trash left by previous visitors, detracting from the natural beauty. Finding large peridot crystals is also reported to be difficult now.

"Kilbourne Hole is a must-visit! There’s not much I can say that would do it justice—you really need to see it for yourself. The entrance is a bit challenging, but the stunning views and overall experience are absolutely worth it."

Mariza Varela

"Other than the trash, it was great. What can I say? People suck!"

Barrick Jacko

"It's a nice cool spot to check out a large crater and go off roading. Only thing that sucks is that this place is littered with broken glass, plastic, beer cans, bullet casings from people who just nilly willy party and shoot out here, then don't clean up after themselves. I could not find large peridot crystals when I came here. They're probably all taken now by people. There's some small tiny ones on the ground though when you look up close."
