What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Big Thicket National Preserve for its free access, beautiful and accessible trails, and the helpfulness of park rangers. The Visitor Center's exhibits are noted as being particularly good for children and newcomers to nature. Some visitors mention the need for preparedness regarding insects and wildlife, and the lack of on-site dining facilities.
"We had some family time to celebrate the first day of Summer. First, we drove out to the Visitor Center, got a map, and toured the exhibit room. Then, we drove about 2 miles to the Kirby Nature Trail. There's a paved parking lot and enclosed restrooms, but no water fountain (you can get filtered water by the bathrooms at the Visitor Center). The trail is visibly marked and easy to traverse, despite strewn, fallen leaves and tree roots. We took the first outer loop, but not the second, as our younger children were tired. It took our family of 5 about 90 minutes with breaks. We thoroughly enjoyed the various bird songs and the rustling of the tree leaves in the gentle breeze. We loved it!"

Modern nature displays perfect for children and neophytes. Books for sale and free pamplets. Clean restrooms. Shaded parking on a well maintained surface."
