We started in the newer church where we met a wonderful woman who escorted us to the old church. Along the way, she gave us a little history lesson, including how the church was built by slave and free, and how, once it was finished, the slaves were allowed to worship at the same time as the white people. True, they entered by a side door and sat in the balcony, but for that time period it was a very progressive allowance. The old church itself is void of decoration, but its true beauty shines. We even received a complimentary copy of the church's history. It was a wonderful experience."
