What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the magnificent, breathtaking views from Sunset Rock, calling it a highlight of their trip. The relatively short, steep hike is considered worth the effort for the panoramic vistas of the river and mountains, especially at sunset. However, the lack of safety railings is a significant concern, making it unsuitable for young children or those with a fear of heights.
"This was probably my favorite thing I experienced while vacationing in the area. There is a small parking lot that holds maybe 6-8 vehicles. There is a plaque explaining the historical significance of the site, then a stone pathway leading down to the edge of the cliff. The stone path turns from smooth to rocky, but it was a fairly easy hike down and back up. Once you reach the end of the path you are greeted by magnificent views of the Tennessee River and mountains. The area is not very large. We luckily only encountered a few other people on our adventure. Two ladies had brought lawn chairs and were sitting off to the side watching some rock climbers rappel down the rocky sides of Lookout Mountain. They had the right idea (the ladies, not the climbers 😂)!We saw a path off to the left and walked down it a little ways before turning back. I’m not sure how far it went or where it lead to. This was a wonderful surprise to behold with my own eyes. I would definitely recommend checking out Sunset Rock. Also a good thing to mention is that there are NO railings or fences to prevent someone from falling off. It’s about 1,300 feet up and you would surely meet your maker. I do not recommend bringing small children or misbehaved animals as you may never see them again!"

"A great place to enjoy a breathtaking view. Some photographers even use this spot for wedding photos! Sunset is definitely the best time to come.
However, I wouldn’t risk going there in bad weather because there are no guards or safety barriers. I also would not recommend it for families with small children. Honestly, it was terrifying to watch elderly people taking pictures right on the edge of the cliff.
For teens, young adults, and families with older kids, though, the experience is incredible.
If you have more than 1–2 hours, I’d suggest going to Rock City instead — there’s much more to see, and sunset photo sessions there are amazing as well. People even bring hammocks so they don’t have to sit on the ground.
One more tip: locals sometimes offer parking for $10, but they don’t give change — so make sure to have small bills with you."

"I recently visited Sunset Rock in Chattanooga, and it was an awesome experience. The hike to the viewpoint is short and manageable, making it perfect for a quick outdoor adventure. Parking is a bit limited, so arriving early is a good idea, but it’s definitely worth it.
Once you reach the top, the view is absolutely stunning—panoramic city and nature sights that are perfect for photos. I spent some time just soaking in the scenery and snapping pictures. It’s a peaceful spot to enjoy a sunset or just get some fresh air without a long trek.
Overall, Sunset Rock is a great spot for anyone looking for an easy hike with a rewarding view. I’d definitely recommend it if you’re in Chattanooga and want a mix of nature, photo ops, and a relaxing outdoor experience."
