Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Falls Trail for its unique historical significance and scenic beauty, offering a glimpse into ancient Pueblo life. The trail's manageable length and the possibility of seeing a seasonal waterfall are major draws. However, some find the uphill return challenging, and the waterfall's presence is not guaranteed.

"Beautiful well marked trail that starts just past the bandolier national monument visitors center parking lot along a narrow dirt and stone path downward 1.5 in and out. It’s an uphill climb back the same 1.5 miles. However you can go however far you want and turn around. We hiked 45 in and turned around. There is a self guided map with numbers on the trail to follow on the bandolier national monument website. Good shoes, hat, water and sunscreen are recommended"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Exploring the Ancestral Pueblo Dwellings

The Falls Trail offers a unique opportunity to step back in time and explore the remnants of the Ancestral Pueblo people who inhabited Frijoles Canyon centuries ago. As you descend the trail, you'll encounter cavates, which are human-made alcoves carved into the soft volcanic tuff rock. These served as homes, storage areas, and ceremonial spaces. Look closely at the walls for signs of ancient plaster and handprints. The self-guided map provides context for each numbered site, detailing its purpose and significance. InstagramReddit

Further along the trail, you'll find more substantial cliff dwellings and pueblo structures. These are remarkable feats of engineering and adaptation to the canyon environment. Imagine the daily lives of the people who lived here, relying on the canyon's resources for survival. The sheer ingenuity required to build and maintain these homes is awe-inspiring. Remember to tread lightly and respect these ancient sites; they are a precious link to the past. InstagramReddit

The Seasonal Waterfall

The "falls" in Falls Trail are a bit of a misnomer, as they are often seasonal and depend heavily on rainfall. During wetter periods, especially after monsoons or significant snowmelt, a beautiful waterfall can cascade down the canyon walls. This ephemeral water feature is a highlight for many visitors, adding a dynamic element to the otherwise arid landscape. TikTok

Experiencing the waterfall is a matter of timing and luck. If you visit after a good rain, you'll be rewarded with the sight and sound of flowing water. Even when the falls are not actively flowing, the rock formations where the water would appear are still impressive. The trail itself is enjoyable regardless of the waterfall's presence, offering stunning canyon views and a chance to connect with nature. TikTok
