Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Alcove House as a highlight of Bandelier National Monument, describing the climb as thrilling and rewarding. While the ascent requires physical effort and can be intimidating for some, the historical significance and stunning canyon views from the ancient dwellings make it a worthwhile adventure for most. Some note potential delays at ladders during busy periods and advise checking for closures.

"The Alcove House is the ultimate finish line of the Bandelier trail system—and it absolutely delivers! This hidden gem is not for the faint of heart, but if you’re up for the challenge, the reward is unforgettable. To reach the ancient ceremonial cave, you’ll climb a series of tall wooden ladders and navigate narrow cliffside paths, which can be intimidating for some, but adds an incredible sense of adventure to the experience.

Once you reach the top, the views are incredible, and standing inside the Alcove House gives you a powerful connection to the people who once lived there. It’s quiet, elevated, and feels like a true glimpse into history. Just be sure to wear sturdy shoes and be physically prepared—the climb requires focus, especially for kids or those with a fear of heights.

If you’re willing to brave the climb, it’s 100% worth it. This was a highlight of our Bandelier visit and something we’ll talk about for years to come!"

"Alcove House is a little bit of a walk from the main loop but so worth it. We went on a Thursday with 9 of us and had a great time. Be prepared to climb up and down the 4 sets of ladders but getting to the top is so rewarding. When there are a lot of people visiting (like the day we went) the time to get up and down the ladders can be delayed. It’s very safe though, and I’m afraid of heights!"

Timothy Murphy

"What a great experience. The hike from the Visitor Center along the Rito de los Frijoles is very nice. The scenery is outstanding. We enjoyed the shade before going up a couple of ladders to reach the Alcove House. This place is magical and very special."
