What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the absolutely stunning and magical views from Lover's Leap Overlook, especially of The Narrows. The hike up, while steep, is considered worth the effort for the breathtaking panoramas. Some find the abandoned factory an interesting historical detour. However, the lack of clear trail markings and potential seasonal access restrictions are common points of frustration.
"This was a hike I always wanted to do as a kid and didn’t. For locals, you park at Bishop Walsh school. There is a small path that leads to a trail along the ridge of the mountain. It is mainly flat until and like a tram road until you get close to the overlook. Then it’s rocky and roots. Nothing is really marked well. I was unable to find the Peregrine Falcons nesting area. Total bummer for this bird nerd. Nonetheless, the view over The Narrows is even more stunning than you can imagine!!
PS: the trail to the left goes nowhere except eventually to a road, in an upscale neighborhood."

"This place is magical! It's a wonderful lovely hike up the mountain! We park from the bottom and walk up on an old service road. On the way there is an old abandoned building we explored. Very neat, but be safe. Then as you continue up you eventually get to the peak of the mountain where you can walk along the ridge line. Just be safe, but you can take amazing photos here. It's also a great place to come and just think."

"Wonderful adventure. We parked at the base of the mountain and walked up the service road to the plastics factory. Explored around the abandoned factory. Then made our way to the iconic spot at the top of the mountain.
Here are a few things to be aware of:
1. The road is a pretty steep climb, not for everyone
2. Graffiti on the road is not kid-friendly
3. Factory not safe for kids
4. Nothing is marked. It took us quite a while to figure out how to get to the peak
5. All of the pathways out to the edge have signs saying no one is allowed between something like March - September, due to bird nesting. We saw at least 6 paths with these signs.
6. We walked on several paths that would probably have ticks in the summer (ok in late-April though)"

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
The trails can be steep and rocky, so ensure children are wearing appropriate footwear. The lack of clear trail markings can also be a challenge, potentially making the hike longer or more confusing. It's best to stick to the main, more established paths and be extra vigilant about safety, especially near any edges. Seasonal restrictions for bird nesting should also be respected.
🚶♀️ Solo Adventurers & Hikers
However, solo adventurers should be extra prepared due to the unmarked nature of the trails and potential for uneven terrain. Informing someone of your hiking plans and carrying essentials like water, a first-aid kit, and a fully charged phone is highly recommended. Be mindful of seasonal restrictions and always prioritize safety, especially when navigating near edges.
📸 Photographers
Be prepared for challenging trail conditions and potentially limited access to certain vantage points due to seasonal bird nesting restrictions. A wide-angle lens is ideal for the expansive vistas, and a tripod can be beneficial for capturing the best light. Always check local regulations regarding drone usage if you plan to incorporate aerial shots.

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
Understanding the Trails and Terrain
Recent events, like the Caldor Fire, have significantly impacted the landscape. The approach and descent were described as destroyed, with unstable, burnt mud and a graveyard of trees. While the overlook reopened, the surrounding trails may still show signs of damage and require extra caution. It's crucial to wear sturdy hiking boots and be prepared for uneven terrain.
Navigating these trails can be a challenge due to the lack of clear markings. Some visitors spent considerable time figuring out the best way to reach the peak. It's advisable to have a sense of direction or consult local advice before heading out.
Seasonal Restrictions and Wildlife
Visitors have noted seeing multiple paths with these 'no access' signs during the restricted period. It's important to respect these closures to ensure the well-being of the nesting birds. While the main overlook view is usually accessible, venturing onto unofficial or edge paths during these months is discouraged and potentially harmful.
Beyond nesting birds, the environment can also present other considerations. For instance, in warmer months, the trails might harbor ticks, so appropriate precautions like wearing long pants and using insect repellent are recommended.
Exploring the Abandoned Factory
While the factory adds an element of adventure, it's important to note that it is not considered safe for children. Visitors are advised to exercise caution and be aware of their surroundings if they choose to explore the abandoned structure. The graffiti present on the factory walls and the road itself is also something to be aware of, especially for families.
This abandoned site provides a stark contrast to the natural beauty of the overlook, offering a glimpse into the area's industrial past. It's a point of interest that many visitors mention as part of their overall experience at Lover's Leap.
