What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mount Ripinsky Trail offers a challenging but rewarding experience with stunning summit views of the Inside Passage. Hikers appreciate the potential for wildlife sightings and the accessible trailhead. However, be prepared for very rooty, muddy, and steep sections, especially on the Piedad Trail, and exercise caution due to recent bear activity.
"Started at skyline trail, out and back and there was a bear encounter warning from Oct 2024. Lots of parking IMHO. Nice shady trail for a hot day but if you take the main trail you have to commit to the summit (or maybe the saddle wherever that is) to get the views. Along the way there is a signed turn for a M/W tower which I assume is microwave and I think it is a cell tower and reportedly 0.5 miles after the tower are some views. Is that what people call the “saddle”? I dunno but there was no saddle along the main trail before I finally had lunch and turned around at mile 2+ on the main trail. I didn’t take that MW turnoff and stuck to the main trail as there was a highlighted notation of a great view on my Kamoot app before the summit, but It was all forested when I got to the location and only views were with a lot of bushwhacking. There are some peekaboo views on the way back down but nothing noteworthy. So I don’t know where the saddle is cause it must be after 2
Miles. I did detour to the marsh meadow which was OK but not much there. Most signs were decent but there were a couple of homemade signs so bring a big waterproof marker if you can and overwrite the signs. Trail maintenance was being done by a couple of super friendly guys from the Hudson Haines Trail group. This trail needs it and has a lot of marshy and muddy areas in the first mile or so. This trail I found to be super rooty and trip hazards abound. I don’t like that very much and did indeed trip several times and had to constantly look at my feet. I hike a lot in WA. I don’t mind steep but roots are a pain. I would not do this if wet and we had a stretch of several dry and hot days. Anyway I might do it again but try the tower trail but most of the mud with planks and stairs to help are in the beginning and not much fun for me. The berries are coming out so will be ripe soon and so will da bears. I think there are other trails that are nice in the area with views like Mt Riley before I go back to this one which takes more work and caution."

"An incredible hike right in Haines' backyard. If you've got a day here, I highly recommend this climb. The trail can be done as a loop or out-and-back, and provides incredible views either way. Hike can get challenging towards the top, but you should definitely press on if you have the ability. There's no better feeling than climbing to the summit and viewing the narrowing Inside Passage, a fitting end to the journey if you've sailed up."

"Beautiful day hike!!! Highly recommend. Did the young road trail access up and back. It takes a few hours up. definitely be bear aware as there has been negative bear encounters this year. It is not recommended to do the piedad trail after rain (either way it’s very steep and slippery yet quicker). Saw mountain goats very close at the top"
