📍Tunnels Beach on the island of Kauai Also known as Makua Beach, Tunnels Beach gets its nickname from the maze of lava tubes found throughout its expansive reef. Located on the north shore of Kauai, in the summer months it’s the perfect place for snorkeling and sunbathing #hawaii #hawaiitrip #hawaiitravel #visithawaii #kauai #kauaihawaii

Makua Beach is one of those rare places where you wonder how it can still be so empty ?! Many tourists never make it this far, thinking there’s “nothing out there” but that’s exactly what makes it the best spot on the island ! When you travel far, you don’t search for crowds, you search for peace. And here you feel the true spirit of aloha and the atmosphere that Hawai’i was meant to offer 🌺 #hawa...

Reviews Summary

Makua Beach is lauded as a serene, less-crowded paradise with stunning natural beauty, clear waters, and spectacular sunsets. Visitors appreciate its peaceful atmosphere and the chance to see marine life like dolphins. However, the lack of facilities and the long drive are noted drawbacks, requiring visitors to be well-prepared.

"Makua Beach is known to us locals as Pray for Sets. Sets, meaning waves. Aa the local name implies, there's hardly ever surfable waves. In Olelo Hawai'i - the native language - it is known as "Keawe Ula" which translates as "Red Belt."

Makua Cave, is on the mauka (mountain) side of Farrington Hwy. It can get a little crowded on weekends when many military and local people spread out on the spacious beach. The waters are usually fairly clear, so free diving and spear fishing are pretty good there. It's one of the cleanest beaches on the We$TSidE. If you do visit Keawe Ula, please be sure to leave nothing but your footprints. This area is very important spiritually to the Hawaiian people. The "Kanaka Maoli" or the "true people." Be sure to lock your vehicles and leave the area by sunset.
Mahalo nui for your cooperation."

"Best sunset ever, there aren’t many people here, out of the tourists reach: no drama or trash. Just a great place to go dip in the ocean read a book have a drink and enjoy the sunsets (by so be sure to bring what you need bc nearest convenience store is 10 mins away also there aren’t any bathrooms nearby)"

William Rodriguez

"Stunning beach we drove over a hour from the windward side but it was definitely worth it the sand is very soft and the water is Crystal clear similar to places like cancun there also underwater caves and multiple tide pools"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Exploring Makua Beach's Natural Beauty

Makua Beach, also known as "Keawe Ula" (Red Belt) in Hawaiian, is a stunning stretch of golden sand on Oahu's west coast. It's renowned for its secluded atmosphere, dramatic Waianae Mountain backdrop, and crystal-clear waters. Unlike its more famous counterparts, Makua Beach offers a sense of peace and tranquility, making it a favorite for those seeking an authentic Hawaiian experience away from the crowds. Instagram+2

The beach is particularly appealing for its snorkeling and free diving opportunities. The waters are typically clear, revealing vibrant coral reefs and a variety of marine life, including colorful fish and sometimes even turtles. Visitors have also reported sightings of dolphins offshore, adding an extra layer of magic to the experience. InstagramReddit

Beyond its aquatic attractions, Makua Beach is a prime location for sunset viewing. The western horizon provides an unobstructed panorama, allowing for breathtaking displays of color as the sun dips below the Pacific. It's a perfect spot to unwind, read a book, or simply soak in the natural beauty. InstagramReddit

Respecting the Sacredness of Makua

Makua Beach holds significant cultural and spiritual importance for the Kanaka Maoli, the native Hawaiian people. Its Hawaiian name, "Keawe Ula," translates to "Red Belt," hinting at its historical or spiritual significance. Visitors are strongly encouraged to approach the area with reverence and respect. Reddit

This respect translates into practical actions: leave no trace by packing out all trash, locking vehicles to prevent theft, and departing by sunset. The beach is considered a sacred space, and maintaining its pristine condition and cultural integrity is paramount. Understanding this context enriches the visitor's experience and contributes to the preservation of this special place. InstagramReddit

While the beach itself is beautiful, the nearby Makua Cave (on the mountain side of Farrington Highway) is also a point of interest. However, it can get crowded on weekends. The overall sentiment from locals and informed visitors is to tread lightly and appreciate the natural and cultural heritage of Makua Beach. Reddit

Planning Your Visit: Practicalities

Visiting Makua Beach requires a bit more planning than heading to a resort-lined shore. The most crucial aspect is packing essentials. Since there are no facilities like restrooms, showers, or shops, you must bring everything you need, including ample water, snacks, and any personal items. The nearest convenience stores are a considerable drive away, so a well-stocked cooler is a good idea. Reddit

Transportation to Makua Beach involves driving along Farrington Highway on Oahu's west coast. While the drive offers scenic views, it can be lengthy, especially if you're coming from other parts of the island. Parking is available along the highway, but it's essential to be mindful of traffic and secure your vehicle at all times. Instagram

Given the beach's remote nature and lack of amenities, it's best suited for day trips where you can fully immerse yourself in the natural surroundings without expecting conveniences. The reward for this preparation is a more peaceful and authentic experience of Oahu's coastline. Instagram+1
