Trailhead Location & Parking

The main trailhead and parking are on Lee Highway, not where Google Maps often directs. Look for the lot on the right, about a quarter mile past Featherbed Lane (if coming from Manassas). Arrive early for the small lot, especially on weekends. Reddit

Tick Awareness & Sun Protection

This area is known for ticks, so wear protective clothing and use repellent. There's limited shade on the trail, so a hat and sunscreen are essential for sunny days. Reddit

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Deep Cut Unfinished Railroad for its beautiful, peaceful scenery and the unique historical significance of the earthworks. The trails are described as quiet and well-kept, offering a personal hiking experience. However, a significant drawback mentioned is the prevalence of ticks, requiring careful preparation, and the limited shade on the trail.

"It’s beautiful out here, full of loops. The scenery feels alive, peaceful, and deeply calming. Just a heads-up: there are a lot of ticks in the area, so make sure to layer up and protect yourself. Other than that, it’s pure beauty, a place worth returning to."

"Great, quiet trail. The path does not start where Google Maps has it marked. It doesn't start at Featherbed Ln at all. The start of the trail (and parking) is on Lee highway - if you're coming from Manassas/Sudley Road, the parking lot is on the right about a quarter mile from Featherbed (on your left past Featherbed if coming towards Manassas). The trail starts right at the edge of the parking lot. Once you walk about half a mile and cross Featherbed, the trail becomes beautiful. The first hill can be just a little bit challenging if you're new to hiking, but after that elevation isn't that bad. Not a whole lot of shade on the trail, so have a hat ready if it's a hot day. You can either do a loop and come back to the parking lot, or keep walking till you reach Lee Highway, and then walk on the side of the highway to get to your car (see picture attached) - but be warned, the path is not paved, and often times you'll have to walk in around 6 inch grass away from the road since cars wizz by at 45 mph. But this whole path will be 3.3 miles, so pretty good. Took us an hour, we saw just 2 people the whole time. Overall, this can be your very own and personal trail with not a lot of people around."
