Barataria Preserve or Fountainebleau State Park
Which one would you recommend? We’ll only have time to go to one. I’d really like to see some alligators, and other wildlife. I’d also like to be able to walk around and explore a bit. I know my kiddo would like to get in the water, if that’s safely possible somewhere. If…

Out-of-Staters - Question about Swamp/Wetland Parks
Hi ya'll. My wife and I are going to be traveling to Louisiana later this month, in the fall. We're avid hikers and wanted to spend most of that time enjoying the outdoor beauty of the swamps and wetlands, as it'll be quite different from our usual nature walks and hikes. I…
Historical Sites and Must Sees outside of toursty places?
So I get the whole Frenchmen Street, French Quarters are cool, etc. etc. (and obviously I will go visit those area and all) Question is, are there things outside of there that are worth visiting? I was thinking of renting a car and driving around to visit historical sites…

Alligators
I live in the New Orleans area (Kenner, I’ve only lived here for 2 years so I’m still finding my way around), and I’m trying to find a place that I can see alligators without going on a swamp tour so I can take some pictures. I don’t mind traveling a little ways but I’d like to…

What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Barataria Preserve for its immersive bayou experience, abundant wildlife sightings, and free admission. The elevated boardwalks offer a unique way to explore the swamp, and the Visitor Center is informative. However, some guests note that trail maintenance could be improved, with occasional closures due to storm damage.
"An excellent preserve, walking the elevated boardwalk through an untouched bayou; it really absorbs you. It is a beautiful preserve. The visitors center is well done and informative. There are multiple boardwalks to walk, however, the day we went there was a thunderstorm that looked to be coming, so we only did the one by the visitors center and bought a couple of souvenir shirts at the gift shop. I expect we'll be back multiple times to walk the other boardwalks as well. Absolutely beautiful walk. Saw two baby gators not much more than a foot long, and a larger one that was at least 6 feet while on this 0.2 mile boardwalk. We also saw several beautiful tropical birds, flowers, Cypress trees, and vegetation. I'm sure we missed a lot more. Take your time to walk through and observe. I'm sure it will pay off. It was free admission and restrooms as well."

"Barataria Preserve offers an immersive and educational experience in Louisiana’s unique swamp ecosystem. Even during midday, the dense tree canopy provides ample shade, making the walk enjoyable despite the heat. Families, especially those with children, will find much to explore—from spotting alligators and frogs to observing the rich plant life along the trails.
The experience of walking through the swamp on raised boardwalks and natural paths is both exciting and memorable. However, some sections of the trail could benefit from better maintenance. A few were closed due to fallen trees, while others showed signs of wear, with aging or partially damaged boards that might pose a safety concern.
That said, considering there is no admission fee, Barataria Preserve delivers excellent value and a few hours of authentic outdoor adventure. With modest improvements to trail upkeep, it could easily stand out as one of the top free attractions in the area.
Rating: 4/5
Pros: Shaded trails, wildlife sightings, engaging for kids, free admission
Cons: Trail maintenance issues, occasional closures due to natural wear"

"Free park with an informative visitors center. The boardwalk trail was accessible and short but gave a chance to see plenty of wildlife. Part of the boardwalk was closed due to damage from falling trees. Keep your eyes peeled and you will be pleasantly surprised by what you see. I could see bugs being a problem later in the summer season"
