What Travellers Say

Visitors consistently praise Baxter State Park for its wild, untouched beauty and the pristine condition of its trails and facilities. The helpfulness and knowledge of the park rangers are frequently highlighted, as is the unique experience of being disconnected from cell service. While the challenging nature of Katahdin is acknowledged, the rewarding views make the effort worthwhile for many.
"Baxter State Park completely amazed me. It’s one of those places that truly feels wild and untouched. I hiked part of the trail up to Mount Katahdin, and even though it was challenging, it was absolutely worth it. The views from up high were incredible!
What I really loved about this park is how peaceful it is. There’s no cell service, which honestly made the experience even better, it let me really disconnect and enjoy the sounds of nature. The park is well-managed, the trails are clean, and the staff and rangers were super helpful and friendly."

"Incredibly well maintained. They even grade the dirt roads, virtually no potholes. Outhouses were immaculate, no garbage visible anywhere top to bottom. Camp sites very clean. Rangers are very friendly and knowledgeable, please listen to them and their advice. If you want to visit the peak know this more of a climb than a hike. They prefer you at the gate by 6am, mostly for your own safety I think. Plan for a difficult 12 hour day and I wouldn't go if theres a chance of rain."

"Our experience began waiting for hiking permits— the rangers at the gates (both checking in and issuing permits) were friendly and personable.
The hike itself (from Roaring Brook Campground to Chimney Pond) was definitely challenging terrain. The weather (heat wave in the 90s) was no fault of the park but made the hike more intense.
Gorgeous views of nature and would recommend (in cooler weather)."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Remember the 'no cell service' rule and ensure children understand the importance of staying with the group. Pack plenty of snacks and water, as there are no services within the park. Educate your children about wildlife safety and the 'Leave No Trace' principles to foster a sense of environmental responsibility. The park's pristine environment offers a unique chance for kids to experience true wilderness.
💰 Budget Travelers
While cabins offer more comfort, they are more expensive than campsites. For the most budget-friendly experience, opt for tent camping and pack all your own provisions. The main 'cost' is the effort required for planning and self-sufficiency, but the reward is an incredible wilderness experience without breaking the bank.
🚶♀️ Solo Adventurers
Solo hikers should prioritize safety by informing someone of their plans, carrying a map and compass, and being realistic about their abilities, especially when considering Katahdin. The park's well-maintained trails and the helpful presence of rangers make it a relatively safe environment for solo exploration, provided proper precautions are taken.

Hiking Mount Katahdin: The Ultimate Challenge
Hikers should be aware that 'hiking' Katahdin is often more akin to 'climbing' in its intensity and technicality. Expect steep ascents, scrambles over large boulders, and sections where you'll need to use your hands for balance. The weather can change dramatically and rapidly, so packing layers, rain gear, and ample food and water is non-negotiable. Rangers strongly advise starting your ascent no later than 6 AM, especially during peak season, to ensure you have enough daylight to complete the round trip safely.
For those considering the climb, it's vital to assess your fitness level honestly. Beginners or those with moderate fitness should opt for less strenuous trails or consider hiking to Chimney Pond as a destination rather than the summit. Always check the weather forecast immediately before your hike and be prepared to turn back if conditions are unfavorable. The park's commitment to preserving its wild nature means you won't find amenities like cable cars or paved paths; it's a true wilderness experience.
Embracing the Wilderness: Life Without Cell Service
Before arriving, it's essential to prepare for this digital detox. Download offline maps of the park and surrounding areas using apps like Google Maps or AllTrails. Inform a trusted friend or family member of your itinerary, including your expected return date and time. This is crucial for safety, as you won't be able to call for help in an emergency. Carry a physical map and compass as a backup, and know how to use them.
Embracing the absence of cell service can enhance your experience. It encourages more mindful observation of your surroundings, deeper conversations with companions, and a greater appreciation for the sounds and sights of the natural world. It's a chance to practice self-reliance and enjoy the peace that comes with being truly present in a wild landscape.
Baxter's Commitment to Preservation and Cleanliness
Park rangers play a vital role in upholding these standards. They are not only knowledgeable about the park's ecology and safety but are also actively involved in trail maintenance, visitor education, and ensuring that the 'Leave No Trace' principles are followed. Visitors are expected to pack out everything they pack in, minimize campfire impacts, and respect wildlife. The immaculate state of the outhouses and the general absence of litter are frequently praised by visitors, highlighting the collective effort to keep the park clean.
This meticulous care extends to the park's infrastructure, including the well-maintained gravel roads. While they can be rough, they are consistently graded, minimizing potholes and making them navigable for most vehicles. This attention to detail ensures that while the park feels wild, it remains accessible and enjoyable for those who come to explore its rugged beauty.
