What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the breathtaking ocean and mountain views, the beautiful coastal flora, and the invigorating wind. The trails offer a good workout with varying difficulty. However, many note the extremely limited parking and the complete lack of facilities like restrooms, which requires careful planning.
"Views, flowers, tree moss, wind and surf. Beautiful coastal flora, parking is scarce bur we managed to fit the car by the road. Some trails are pretty uneven with ruts and would be difficult for people with balance issues or with strollers."
Lubov Sverdlova (O.P.)
"We did a counter clockwise loop hike from the tiny parking lot. I would say it was moderate to hard in some parts of the trails. I’m glad it was cloudy because Montara Mountain trail is open space with minimal shade areas.
I liked Alta Vista trail better but it was pretty steep and slippery bc off the sand, so next time we’ll bring poles.
P.S.
- Parking is very limited
- No toilets
- No picnic tables (or did we miss them? 🤔)"

"Probably the best hike trails out there in the area! Amazing views,"

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Given the lack of facilities, pack all necessary supplies, including plenty of snacks, drinks, and diapers if needed. The limited parking means arriving very early is crucial, especially on weekends. While there are no picnic tables, finding a scenic spot for a packed lunch with a view can be a memorable experience. The open, exposed nature of the trails means sun protection is paramount for little ones.
🐶 Dog Owners
Be mindful of the trail conditions; some sections can be steep and uneven, which might be challenging for older dogs or those with mobility issues. The limited parking is also a consideration; arriving early will increase your chances of finding a spot for you and your pup. Remember to always clean up after your dog to help keep these beautiful trails pristine for everyone.
🚶♀️ Hikers Seeking Views
Be prepared for a workout, as many trails involve significant elevation gain and can be steep. The exposed nature of the terrain means you'll be treated to unobstructed views but also need to be ready for sun and wind. Consider bringing trekking poles to help navigate the uneven and sometimes slippery sections, especially on trails like Alta Vista.

Navigating the Trails
Be prepared for varied terrain. Some trails are well-maintained, while others can be quite rudimentary, featuring footpaths through low brush. Sections can be steep, uneven, and slippery, especially with sand, making trekking poles a valuable addition for stability. Hikers looking for a more challenging trek can aim for the North Peak, which involves a steeper climb and can be around 7.2 miles roundtrip.
Remember that the park is largely exposed with minimal shade. Always carry plenty of water, wear sunscreen, and bring layers of clothing to adapt to changing coastal weather conditions, which can include strong winds.
The Montara Mountain Experience
The mountain is known for its beautiful coastal flora, with diverse wildflowers and plant life that are particularly vibrant in the spring. The experience is often enhanced by the invigorating ocean breeze and the distant sounds of the surf, creating a refreshing and wild atmosphere.
While the views are spectacular, hikers should be aware of the lack of facilities. There are no restrooms, visitor centers, or picnic tables, so come prepared. Parking is also a significant challenge, with limited spaces available at trailheads.
Photography Opportunities
Beyond the grand vistas, the park offers opportunities for close-up nature photography. In spring, the trails are adorned with a variety of wildflowers, providing colorful subjects. The unique coastal vegetation, including moss-covered trees and hardy shrubs, also adds texture and interest to photographs.
To make the most of your photography session, consider bringing a wide-angle lens to capture the expansive scenery and a telephoto lens for distant coastal features or any wildlife you might spot. Due to the often windy conditions, a tripod can be essential for sharp, stable shots.
